Jumpy air filter housing

While working on my car I noticed that the air filter housing is jumping around or vibrating pretty much. Since it's right above the turbo I'm a little concerned. The rest of the engine seems fine.

I also noticed that the belt for the a/c compressor seems loose and flops too much. The adjustment is out all the way so I'll have to buy a new belt. I wonder if that's causing the vibration in the a.f.h.? I turned the a/c off and that did seem to help.

I haven't had to adjust these belts yet. They don't seem easy to get to.

Air cleaner is mounted on 3 rubber mounts which are probably broken. The underlying cause could be worn out engine mounts.

Wow, that was a couple of quick responses. I hope the support rod isn't broken. I replaced the housing two months ago because of a broken rod. That also fixed a problem I didn't know I had, a malfunctioning oil separator. It seems that excess oil in the housing was causing the white smoke I was seeing on startup and acceleration. I'll check the rod tomorrow.

I have had a problem with the nuts on the three supports comming loose. I'll check them too.

I had the driver's side engine mount off today to replace an oil cooler line. It seemed fine, at least the rubber was ok. I was wondering about the other side. Maybe I should check it. Those little shock absorbers in the engine mounts seem pretty strange. Any way to check or adjust them? If they aren't leaking oil are they ok?

Why don't you go to Ace or a speciality bolt place and buy some of those nuts which have plastic on the end threads.... self locking.. or clean the studs and use some locktite on them...

mounts

The only issues are broken mounts or the mount becomes loose in the bracket and eats out the threads.
Simple repairs:
Replace the mount or add a washer and nut under the bracket.

You need a total of three mounts.

how many miles on

Hello 83 300D
how many miles on your car?
Have you ever seen another car like yours, hood up at idle to compare the engine vibration/rocking?

Those little shock absorbers in the engine mounts are critical for proper vibration damping.

Don't forget the metal cups that go under
these rubber mounts.

Thanks Louis.

I do forget those blasted cups almost every time.
A silly mistake, easy to correct.

My car has 290,000 miles. But it's been well maintained and runs good. I haven't seen another one of these with the hood up to compare it to. I know these engines are real bangers. How much vibration is normal? How does the thing hold together with all that vibration?

thanks all.

Noticed that my air filter housing can be lifted up and down, it's not attached. Now I have a plan, thanks again to this forum!!

motor mounts

if you are breaking the air bracket frequently - you might check the condition of your motor mounts as well. the top of the motor does tend to thrash around a lot
