606 oil filter / crush washer
 

95 e300d 133k. I'm sorry in advance for not using the correct part names, but here goes.

The long tube (about 10" long with two small o-rings on the bottom) that screws into the oil filter housing lid has a hex head which is 13mm. Does a crush washer belong between the hex head and the filter housing lid? The crush washer used for the oil drain plug fits perfectly. The Mann replacement filer came with the large o-ring and two crush washers of the same size. (usually, the two crush washers are different sizes and I toss out the small one.) My hunch is that no washer is needed there, but it got me thinking and I'd like confirmation. Respectfully submitted.

Connerm,Yes there is a crush washer under the center bolt on the E300D oil filter housing,I to have the same car 123K miles, my original was aluminum,second oil change it dropped down in to the bowels of the engine cover ,never to surface again, I use the copper crush washer that comes with the filter,and the other one goes on thr eng drain plug.

I have the same car aand have a question for you.

When you change your oil filter, do you first remove the center bolt of the cover and then the two other bolts, or can you remove and lift out the filter cover by just removing the two outside bolts?

I have the same car 160KM, when I did my oil change I only loosened the 2 bolts that hold the lid and took out the lid with the long shaft on it.

The oil filter housing has two 13 MM nuts and the through bolt to secure the filtr,I loosen all three in order,just to insure that there is no chance of warping the cover,then I remove the center bolt then two 13 MM nuts,with all the wireing harness in and around the housing cover plate. I find this is the most convient way to do my filter service, and I ALLWAYS torque the two 13 MM nuts and the center bolt to spects.

The reason that I asked if you remove the center nut is that on my car ('95 E300 Diesel) I find that it is almost impossible to lift out the oil filter lid if I only remove the two outside nuts. What happens is that one I try to lift the cover straight up it hits against the fire wall and I then have to basically push with a great deal of force the firewall out of the way to allow enough clearnece for the cover to come up.

I haven't yet tried to remove the cover by first removing the center bolt and then the other two bolts. I'll try that next time I change my oil filter.

Does anyone else have the same problem with this model car?

Phil,The problem you describe is the reson I remove the centr tube/bolt,My first oil change convinced me thar this is the best way to get the job done.
