Need help with 115 240D

The 1975, 240D just landed in my front yard from a kid in my youth group. She had it hauled from Iowa (gift from Grandpa).

Its white and very nice.

TWO QUESTIONS:

1. Upon casual glance above and below, I can't locate the oil filter. Any help?

2. Its been sitting for 3 years but rolls nice and the brakes don't lock up. All fluids are up and look good. I'm going to drain the fuel and pump fresh stuff through it, but what else would you do?

Hello,

Oil filter is alongside the lower left(driver's) side of the engine, ahead of or behind the motor mount(I am getting old..).

Replace ALL fluids.

Check for terminal rust around the front edges of floorboards up into firewall area , lift carpets to inspect.

look at the pic in this thread (Nekkid OM617)

The oil filter is in the same place on your 616...bottom left front facing forward. Warning, it doesn't use the same cartridge as the later 616 (with the top-mounted oil filter) and you WILL make a mess changing oil.

Also, you'll probably need a 17mm hex head wrench to get the drain plug out of the pan.

Here is a post I made some time back which addresses the oil filter draining on 115 220D's, the early 240D's sound similar. Hope this helps.

"Ah come on, the 115 oil change is not bad at all. The trick is to plan to hold the case up against the O-ring seal until you drop the bolt into the drain pan. Less than a minute after that is done, nearly all of the oil in the case that is going to run out any time soon, has done so. Pull the case down, tip it into second drain pan or other fairly clean container and dump out the filters and spring. Clean up all reusables and refill the case with new goodies. Push the case up and start the bolt, then use a ratchet carefully to get the bolt nearly to the bottom of the case. Wiggle the case a bit to center and push up to seal. Then finish tightening the bolt. That part of job is done and can be accomplished in a white shirt, if it is not the first time you do the job!!! Ran the 220D/8 for twenty years and did all of the oil changes, but one, on the ground with no ramps; so this was a Routine Job. Agree that a grease rack would help some, but certainly not a big deal this way."

I forgot to tell you that there is also a 'prefilter' in that oilfilter cannister. You probably should have one on hand in case that the one in the car is damamged or cannot be cleaned adequately.

Thanks for mentioning the prefilter. Should have covered that more specifically in the post above.

I always used some diesel fuel in an appropriately sized stainless beaker to rinse the plastic two fin prefilter. After that it needs to be inspected for screen integrity, as it is not included with the replacement cartridges and is expected to be reused. This part does add to the complexity of the system and the filter replacement procedure, but not overly so.

I thought that diesel fuel was good for many years unlike gasoline...just go ahead and add diesel treatment for algae and maybe water treatment...Lets have some comments on diesel fuel .....JIm

I just got back from a father-son quad trip and will tackle the 115 today. Can't wait to see if she'll fire. The last tag on the car indicates that it was driven in '99. Yet she looks nice and has a good feel while rolling, etc.
