Is this chain properly closed (87 300D)?
I kind of remember on my last three chains, the Chain Tool would "mash " the two pins on the Connection Link so that the heads of the pins would look chamfered like all the other pins on the Chain.
This time, all it looks like I did was press the female attachment link on the two pins of the male attachment link side without "peening" the heads of the pins.
I used a rented tool from Performance Products this time and not the one from the Benz dealer.
Yes, I sure used a lot of torque on the wrench with the Chain tool.
This may be adumb question, but it would be dumber not to get confirmation. Thank you very much.

I believe I would crimp it some more. Did you move the "die" on the tool around to the position with the "vee" and have the vee over the pin? You are at a point now that you can use a ball peen hammer and finish it up if you do not want to continue with the tool.

Everyone I have ever done with the tool you would have been hard pressed to tell it from the others.

I knew something was wrong...

I think PP rents a "SirTools" crimper, which IMO, is junk. The OE dealer crimp tool (made by Iwis, the chain manufacturer) is a fantastic tool but very expensive - $400-$600 for the whole setup (it's sold in separate pieces). The OE tool has jaws that press the center plate into place (some aftermarket master links have a slip-fit center plate, but the OE links are a press fit). And the OE tool will press the outer side plate in place, before you rotate the jaw and crimp it. Let us know how it turns out!

BTW - my chain stretch went from 4 degrees to zero with the new chain in a 603, at ~240kmi.
