Rear left axle for '87 300D (124)

Can I buy a newer axle and it will fit this car, i.e. a used '91 model 300E axle, or I should have a rebuilt '87. I heard before that there is a new flange has to be installed at the differential first!! please help!

Newer axle shafts had an indent to better help the centering of the axle. There is an adapter plate that can be used or the entire axle stub is replaced.

I have some axles from '87 300D's if you are interested (PM/email me).
