Looking at buying a wrecked '79 300SD with 80K miles on a MB "crate motor"
Today I looked at a wrecked 300SD with about 80K miles on a factory replacement motor. The car itself is not salvagable so I would be buying it for just the engine. There are some usuable mechanical and body parts and it has good seats. The car took a bad hit head on on the drivers side. The engine is untouched. The owner is asking $750 for it. He has the receipt for the engine and it was over $6000! I think it's probably worth it. He had plans to transplant the engine into another SD but he so far hasn't been able to find one worth the bother. I'd like to have a spare engine when the time comes.
What do you all think?

There probably would be several folks, myself for one, who might be interested in parts. You might be able to recoup your expenses!
I have an interest in palomino (or something that can be dyed to that color) interior. Some may think I'm dreaming but leather or velour is what I prefer. I'm also looking for some engine wiring that is in good shape (glow plug, boost valve, emissions etc). By the way, it sounds like you may have found an excellent motor, sorry, I wouldn't be able to tell you if that is a good price or not.

A '79 SD is a w116 chasis, not a w126. Also, '79 SD'd didn't have any of the emissions, which is one of the many ways that the 116 is superior over the 126. (in my opinion of course )
Thanks David
