My new 300CD (warning: image heavy)
I liked the 240D that I built for my daughter so much, that I started looking for a diesel for me. I wanted an 80s 300CD. I found one and flew up to Maryland (actually flew to Wash. DC) and picked it up this weekend and drove it back to Savannah. This is the first time I've been on a plane since 1976, and the first time my 16yr old son has ever been on a plane. He was pretty scared. Actually, when the plane started taxing into position, I checked his heart and it was racing pretty fast. The only thing I was scared about was how my stomach felt a couple times :D . Anyway, was a great flight. The owner picked us up at Washington Dulles Int. and drove us up to Laurel, MD. New right away I had a gem and after looking it over and a test drive to confirm it I bought it on the spot. The only problems were a few cracks in the dash (common problem on the 123s) and a loose wire which I fixed this morning. Drove the son back to DC and we spent the day sight seeing. The White House, Lincoln memorial, Wash Mall, etc. Even went to an art museum (Corcoran Gallery). Drove home afterwards. Got pulled over in Virgina (my son did, and this is when I discovered the loose wire :D ) and North Caroline (me), both times for no tag. Showed my purchase papers and was on my way (BTW, we spent the whole day driving around in DC with all it's security and no tag, and never got pulled over ;) ). Car drives like a dream, the turbo comes in nicely and pulls hard and fast.
Anyway, here's the pics I took this morning. Tag in the picture was freshly transfered over from a Olds Omega I gave to my oldest son. GA requires you to keep your tag now and transfer it to any new vehicle. http://home.comcast.net/~phantoms/300CD_01.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~phantoms/300CD_02.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~phantoms/300CD_03.jpg |

http://home.comcast.net/~phantoms/300CD_11.jpg The dirt on the floormats is from the trip home. Otherwise, the mats and carpet are like new. The only thing I saw added (from original), were the CD player and the window tint. BTW, the most beautiful young lady that I have ever seen was on my flight. Unfortunately, her seat was no where near mine and once we arrived at Dulles, I was a couple people short of catching the same tram/bus as her to the terminal. :( |
That is one CLEAN 300CD.. best of luck with it!

Thank you!
Forgot a couple other non-original things. The A/C has a R-134a retrofit and there's an added alarm system, but both seemed to have been professionally done. |
Your steering wheel is on upside down!!!!!!!!
      :D |
Nice 123 coupe! :)

How'd did you find it? Ebay/car trader?
Nice looking find. |
I would love to have a 123 300CD but if they are in as nice shape as your new CD is, they are usually out of my affordable price range.
Did you get it for less than $3K? How many miles? Nice car, and the best of luck to you, hope you have many good times with her....... :) |
It's an 85 model. Yes, the steering wheel is fine, it was just that the wheels were turned. I found it on Ebay and paid $2500 for it. It has 249000 miles on it, but runs like a dream. I was very worried about buying through Ebay but everything turned out fine. I looked at another (smoke gray 1980 model) that I was interested in, but it was in California and that was a little too far. When I picked the car up, the A/C was not working. He stated that the blower motor was not working. A quick check confirmed freon in the system and a compressor clutch kicking in, just no blower motor. Was going to take a look at it but it started working on it's on (A/C blows cold) so I didn't. Should have though as this morning it was inoperable again. This weekend when I have time, I'm going to do a ton of maintnance items (even though I have a log book starting none is needed for a couple months) and tackle the blower motor. I believe it is probably just brushes. Today, while cruising about 45 through town, the speedo quit. Got home and checked it and the cable broke internally. I'll tackle that this weekend too. Overrall I am extremely please with my whole purchasing experience and the 300CD.

Sweet car! And it looks like you got a good deal on it. I've been thinking about getting a 300CD as a second car, and would love to find one as nice as that.
BTW, whose '68 Camaro is that in the background? I used to have a '69 and wish I still did! Congrats! |

That's my project car that I can never get good and going on. Runs and drives great. I take it out regularly. I had a 67 RS/SS 396 when I was younger and missed it every since parting with it. Came across this 68 on one of the days I was thinking about my 67 and decided I needed it. :D |

I should be spending time on my Camaro, as it sits in the garage under its cover and then a bunch of blankets that the cats lay on. I sometimes go 6 months without starting it, and it always fires right up after pumping fuel back through the lines. Idles just as smooth as if it were injected. I spend all my spare time trying to keep my '80 300TD running...
The Camaro has 59,000 actual miles too. Had it 12 years, and haven't put a thousand miles on it I don't think. I know, that's criminal... JL |
Very nice Camaro JimmyL. And it looks to be in excellent shape.

Found my blower problem today. It's actually not a blower problem, but a corroded fuse. Had planned on doing a lot of maintenance and other items tomorrow, but now with the hurricane predicted to pass nearby, I'll have to wait and see on the weather. Anyway, ran into a right window/Left rear window problem today, suspected a fuse and decided to rotate all the fuses while I was there. Sure enough, the blower problem was related to a fuse (as was the window). Anyway, picked up some new fuses at Napa today. They carry the newer glass enclosed style fuses with pointed ends. Now I have to match color to amp as I'm use to just replacing color for same color. Does anybody remember the amps/color off the top of their head? While I was under the hood, I norticed that all the bolts in the compressor were loose, with one completely out. Glad I caught it and checked all bolts under the hood after finding that. Should have thought to check that earlier as I know better when it comes to diesels and shaking bolts loose. :D

"Now I have to match color to amp, as I'm used to just replacing color for same color."
Believe that the old style have the amp level in raised numerals on a portion of the body. Probably on the back side not covered by the fuse link. |
Noticed on the fuse cover that list color and amps.
Changed fuel filters, air filter, oil filter, oil and flushed the cooling system and refilled with Zerex yesterday. The expansion tank was leaking at the seam and I had to put a Volvo one that I had on hand in there until I can get a new one in. Also noticed the aux fan was binding and took it apart and replaced the front bearing. Replaced the speedo cable with one from a newer SD but it's still not registering. It was getting late and had to head home, hopefully I just didn't get it completely seated on one end, as it looked identical to the one that came out. |
I wish:
That they sold the 300CD in Australia back in 1980 - 85, that they sold the 300D with Turbo in Australia back in 1980 - 85, that freight from USA was really cheap nowadays and that you lot drove on the other side of the road. If either the first 2 or the second 2 wishes came true, I would now be driving a 300CD turbo. Boo hoo. :( |
I wish that on my side of the pond, 3-piece AMG rims were easier to find. :D
