heater always on

Hello everybody, My 1981 240d manual tranny, heater is on all the time, all of the cables seem ok and work fine, can't cool it down. Fan does not work all the time, air conditioner does not work. Any ideas ?

Automatic Climate Control?? If it was me I'd start by disconnecting the cables under the hood at the monovalve system on the firewall and then manually set the valves closed this time of year... then permanently open em up when it gets cold or during coolant flush maintenance operations.

Hell, I'd probably be tempted to eventually bypass the AutoCC completely.... using toggle switches to kick the A/C or operate the fan and just manually flipping the heater flaps from underneath twice each year for Winter defrost and heat or Summertime cool. Kick panels I could live without so i could possibly reach the heater core flaps without hassle for manual adjustment.

Ah, what fun it would be to pull the guts out of the horrible Automatic Climate Control and smash it with sledgehammer then hurl the bits into the woods. Probably gotta keep the dopey push buttons and dial in the dash as dummies though, just to make the dashboard look complete.

Manual AC on that car, I believe, most of the time.

The heater temp controls are vacuum operated on the manual system, check for a broken green vac line near the brake booster or the vacuum line to the booster.

You should get a Mitivac hand pump at the auto parts store, the only way to troubleshoot vacuum problems.

The actual problem may be a simple as a broken line in the engine compartment, but you could also have a bad switch, leaking actuators, etc.

If you do have ACC (temp wheel and two sets of pushbottons for fuction and fan speed), you have a blown ACC fuse in the fusebox -- defaults to full heat with dash vents only when the fuse is bad, no blower.

The W123 240D with manual heat/air controls has dual heater controls on the centre of the dash, either side of the A/C temperature wheel, above the radio. These control knobs operate cables to the coolant valves on the firewall. If they are operating correctly, then when in the fully CCW position, they will not allow coolant to the heater cores.
If heat is on all of the time then they cannot be operating correctly.
