Fouled injector tips could cause this also.
It is relatively simple to remove them for inspection. Pull them and check them out. then either clean them yourself and/or take them to an injector shop to be cleaned & tested.

Jim,

Your GP resistance readings look low. How did you measure the resistance? Did you remove the GP cable connector from the GP relay when you measured the resistance?

Smoke and missing at start up

JimmyL:
Were all wondering what was the cause of your problem? What was the fix?

I've been following this thread as well. Puzzles interest me. :)

Maybe its not fixed.....

Cheers,

Bill

If you have a leaking injector ,you will get white smoke at startup. Generally, white smoke is unburned fuel. The fuel is atomizd but not completely burned.
Also, a leaking injector will not only leave a cylinder with a puddle of diesel in it at startup, It will be like starting a vehicle that ran out of fuel at first. at least on that cylinder(s), rough idle, knocking etc.
After the vehicle has sat overnight, pull one injector out at a time. The bottom tip should be dry. If its soaking wet, you found your problem. HTH Mike

I'm still fighting it, and I'm still losing! I did the diesel purge this weekend, and at first with promising results. I emptied the spin on filter, filled it with purge (lubrimoly), then ran two cans through the car. Smoke went away and car seemed to idle quite nicely. Reconnected fuel lines and went to the store. On the way back, I noticed smoke when I let off the accelerator at a stop. Smoked heavily everytime I came to a stop. Car sat overnight, and the startup was the same as before. It fires RIGHTAWAY, but then coughs and sputters and dies. I finally could get it running, and the smoke was back. Took it out on the highway for about a 50 mile drive. It's too bad, 'cause this car drives down the road so well once up to speed. Really seems to have it's most power above 60mph, and doesn't appear to smoke blowin down the highway. Very smooth. But it still smokes when I stop, and idles rough and misses slightly at very low speeds.
To me, it does sound injector-ish, based on what I have been told. I will pull injectors, see what they look like, and probably post questions at that point.
Thanks still to all who are providing suggestions.
Jimmy
*attacheded picture is car running during purge*

*edit: PEH, I pulled the connector from the relay, and measured from connector and a ground. I used the block, and I used another grounded surface, and the readings were the same. Using Fluke 87.

So has the problem changed? Thought it was a start up issue that went away after first start up and warm up? Now sounds like the problem is constant, yes? Let the car sit over night, pull injectors one at a time, should be dry, IF not, rebuild / replace. Just sounds like a leaky injector to me BUT......
Good luck, or should I say good hunting!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers

Nobody mentioned VALVE ADJUSTMENT. Mine had started to get tight and woudl smoke on cold starts and run rough a minute or two... then clear up.

only put 6,000 miles on it since I bought it so finally got around to checking valve clearances. Bingo, 8 of 10 valves were way tight. Adjusted to spec and fires instantly , no white smoke first minute and is smooth after cold starts.

There's also a thread entitled "Engine going south", or something like that. I started that thread as an update/change to this one.
The injector pull sounds like my next course of action, just need to get off of work in time to get it done one evening. Valves, tank, filters, fuel, have all been done.
