Here too, happened this morning. Was able to shut it down with the IP shut off switch. It did not 'Run away", just idled.

Any thoughts?

This is just simple vacuum leak issues. either a line got popped off near the oil filter, or your vacuum shutoff switch has failed on the IP. TOTALLY different from a RUN AWAY... like said above, pull the brown line off the IP and suck on it with a mity vac or your mouth. if it shuts down, you're golden, just find the leak and fix it. you also have to have vacuum from the vacuum pump working too...

Wow . . . just read the whole thread! many things are covered multiple times!

Thanks Hunter for the info needed to think this through before hand!

I once saw a large semi in in a shop I started to work in on the first day, run away, fortunatly the boss had a clipboard handy, they sure can make an awful roar!

300D runaway adrenaline jolt

my '84 has been in the garage for about 6 months waiting for a B-2 piston.
and a couple other things, caliper rebuild, flex pipe.

time to start, battery dead, charge...

starts right up, maybe turns over twice.

(she was running very well on wvo/dino blend before B-2 failure)
(the car only has about maybe 3000 mi with wvo)

away she goes, not accelerating really fast, but increasing.
I turn off the key, not stop, get out push stop button, not stop.

so I pulled the intake tube to air cleaner and cover with my hand.
(I hadn't read this thread yet)
she boggs down and stops.

I think 'that was weird', and start it again.
it did stop pretty easy, and didn't get REALLY fast.
(I think about 5000 rpm)

she starts right up again, does the same, I do the same.
not stop, but slows down a lot, really sucking my hand,
making lot of black smoke.

I think it got up to about 5000 again,
and slowed to about 2000, pulling hard,
with my hand over the air cleaner opening

I take out my swiss army knife (had to open it with my teeth)
cut the fuel line to pre filter.
she boggs down and stops.
I get MASSIVE adrenaline bump.

the car was running for about a minute total.

any ideas what would cause this?
what would be affected by storage?

I don't remember any shut-off issues before repairs.
I can't see anything amiss, no new leaks, linkage all seems reasonably snug and functioning, stop button moves everything connected to it.

Exclamation

I have had VW diesel Rabbits run away.
I will happen on a really worn engine.
Going up a long hill and getting real hot,the engine will start running away, burning sump oil.
Can't stop the engine no way no how.
Scared the ++++ out of me and others I've seen it happen to.

Thanks for this thread. Going to get a CO2 extingusher and talk to the kid about what to do if this happens. I'm wondering though if the stall technique using the clutch and brake with our 4 speed wouldn't be faster should this ever happen.

I had a 617 run away on me. It was an engine that already had a bad bore + piston. I quickly put a 2x4 I had handy over the turbine inlet. My ears tell me the engine revved past 4,500 rpm. Probably closer to 5K rpm. The engine started right back up, but it had that invetiable knock that was agitated by free revving. The engine was basically junk before it ranaway... My sob story

YOU GOT IT!! Saw this a few times on cars where people wanted to 'max out" what the injection pump could do!

I vote for CO2 or loosening injector capnuts for shutoff on an MB diesel. Other engines this won't necessarily work (the CO2 extingisher will, always -- Halon isn't safe, nor widely available anymore). Many engines have unit injectors, so no capnuts (and some are under the valve cover, too!). Electric solenoid cutoffs will almost always shut down when you pull the wire, too.

VERY TRUE!

NEVER put you hand over a turbo intake, SERIOUS injury is likely to occur (loss of hand!). The turbo won't slow down much as it minces your fingers!

I used a large rag for this.

You can stop a PONTON diesel (170-180-190-D) with a large towel, but it will take about 5 minutes to get the towel out of the intake later when it is sucked in!

NO,
I am low tech. I keep a simple phone that can't be tracked on the network, and the price for that is no camera.

Lately I have been selling large amounts of tools on weekends at swap meets, most are SAE sets of Snap-On, Williams, Easco, Barcalo and Indestro or MAC. Need to reduce clutter and make some cash available. Plus am finishing the workshop portion of the man cave and preparing for an auction to buy a Bridgeport machine, now that I have acquired an engine lathe, a surface grinder, and a 100 ton forging machine (which I may resell, people are pestering me about it).
Plus I still work two jobs.

Had a friend with a really weedy old diesel VW have that happen. He was able to slow it down with the brakes to a point where the blowby was no longer enough to keep it going. (Less RPM = less blowby.) Lucky escape, although if the engine had self-destructed it would at least have been out of its misery. Later VWs often have a baffle under the valve cover to help keep the cam from slinging oil mist into the breather plumbing. They lack the cyclonic oil separator found on most Mercedes diesels, which I think is a better-engineered solution.

Thanks for the Great Post. Owning two diesels I thought hmmmmm, maybe I'll pick up a CO2 extinguisher, shocked to see they cost over $200!! I know, I know, cheaper than an engine. No where to really slam a phone book down on a 603 either.

Wonder if I could rig something up to my 75/25 80 CF Mig cylinder?
