Replacement Key Head At The Stealership

I stopped by my local stealership today. They have a habit of selling their parts over and above factory MB suggested retail. Of course they are owned by AutoNation.

They wanted $21.00 for a replacement plastic key head. Yeah thats the plastic part of your key that tends to break over time and then the metal part twists in your hand while you try to start the car.

Thanks but no thanks, got a PP catalog in the mail today and they want only $9.45 for the MB brand. Wonder what Fastlane wants for the same item?

A lady came in after me looking for a replacement key for her 2001 230 Kompressor, the one's with the electronic key. $210!!!

Thank goodness we own the ones built in the simple days.

Hattie,

The SDL has been in the garage for 10 days. I took the SD on a leisurely drive to the airport and was down in Atlanta for four days.

Did the headgasket fix go well? How does the 617 compare to the 603?

Mine will be getting engine mounts and shocks this week, I will also be removing the lower plastic peice that covers tha jack points, grinding them down and painting them before that surface rust gets worse. I will also put on a new set of jack pads and fix a little plastic part that broke on my glove box last week. I was shocked that I could get a part at the MB dealer for under a $1!

Wink Replacement key head

Eric,
I had the same issue 2 years ago, and the final solution I came up with was to have a friend solder my keys between two, US dollar coins. Sacajawea for ignition, SBAnthony for the doors. (See my other posts with photo, search under '300sd keys'). If you are in SoCal, try Performance Products in LA. Their latest catalog has them for $9.45@, still a rip-off when you figure they only last 18 months or so. Good Luck! SteveKaa

I've always felt there were underlying reasons for some dealerships to charge more than others, some MUCH more even to the point of being a rip-off but I never realized that there might be something like the fact that AUTO NATION might be involved. I don't really know anything about AUTO NATION in the first place but after reading this article in a local newsrag I don't want to have any part of doing bsuiness with them!

* Mountain View Voice, section "InBusiness" 6/6/08
WORKERS GO ON STRIKE AT BMW DEALERSHIP
Mechanics and service writers at BMW of Mountain View went on strike this week, saying their reputation for doing high quality work at the last honest BMW dealer in the Bay Area was on the line"
Dozens of workers picketed that dealership, carrying signs discouraging customers from shopping there.
The dealership's new corporate owner, FL-based Auto Nation, wants mechanics and service writers to be paid on commission instead of the current salaries..
Workers say that, under the proposed business practices service wroters could be rewarded for selling customers unnecessary work, while mechanics could be rewarded for rushing jobs. "they would py us for how fast we do it" one worker said. "Thats not a very good way to get your car fixed."
Workers said the dealership has one of the best reputation for BMW service in Silicon Valley, ofter serving customers referred to them by other dealers. With 45 mechanics this is one of the busiest.

Auto Nation, a Fortune 500 company started by the founder of Blockbuster Video purchased the co while it was known as Allison BMW and the only unionized BMW dealer in the Bay Area. Since then the co tripled the number of mechanics and added a new multi-story building and a Mini dealer opened up next door (also made by BMW). "
One mechanic commented that "we built all this for them then instead of rewarding us they punish us."

(Better off using an Independent shop instead - DDH)

Our local MB dealer's parts advisor has a domain name that's @autonation.com but so far I've had good luck with the parts guy. Hopefully things won't change...

I've been using the same key for 5 years....my car came with all 4 original keys, one of them is quite worn, but its the one the owner used the first 21 years/207,000 miles of the car's life, its still perfectly usable, just shows its wear. So I set that one aside and have been using one of the "mint" other keys....so far in 5 years I have not noticed any wear on the key (including the black plastic part) I have been using....maybe some people are just too violent with their key?

$5 seems reasonable, considering the WorldPac sells them thru dealers for $4.90 p/n is000-766-44-06 "key bow" or Schluesselkopf or Tete de cle or Plastico Para llaves.
