I have my truck and trailer hooked-up and pointed out the driveway. As soon as I am packed and well-rested I will be on my way.

Hey

That is a pretty cool upgrade pricing sheet. I was particularly interested in the wheels and the paint and what they charged for the upgrade.

Thanks

These cars were a very expensive eccomony cars in their day. The avererage Japanesse or American car back then that got 30 mpg was in the $4000 to $7000 range.

Well blow me down!!!!

Wow, that picture made it look like the car was a shade of green rather than grey!!
Now I realize that the surrounding grass was reflected on the glass like finish of the car.

mileage on odometer when you bought it??

Unkl300d sorry to say no relation to Popeye, but his home is only about 120 miles from here. He's from Chester, IL in case you didn't know.

Went out and started the '81 300D up so as to move it up and on the driveway. After sitting three days, and with no glow plugs working, it started right up without straining. Sure runs rough for about a minute, but smooths out as it starts firing on all cyclinders. A friends New VW diesel would just barely start (took a lot more cranking & would not start after sitting over night) and was hard to keep running when it's glow plug harness went bad.

Well twitchkitty came and went without the '81 MB. I don't understant what he expected, but he commented on how much better the car looked then in the pictures, but he was afraid of the engine. He thought he heard a chain noise, so what??? It's a 23 year old car, it may need a chain. I told him I heard it also just to be polite, I didn't. I thought he was leading up to a counter offer but there was none, not that it would done any good.

So if anyone would like to buy a an '81 300D $650 contact me (yes I raised the price $50, why? Because of being kept up till after midnight by twicthkitty) and we can make arrangements for pick up. 573-686-8868

All the info on the car is here in my previous postings, there may be small things I have forgot to mention, such as the car has good exhust system or the windshield washer system in disconected.

If you can do most of the work yourself needed to bring the car back to something to be proud of when you drive the car, then the car is a steal. If you require someone else to do the work, it will be expensive, and may require spending thousands of dollars to bring it back to the new car condition. However in my opinion you will still be better off then buying a new car by far, and will have something to last for a life time.

Just got a call from Diesel Power and said he is sending a deposit for the car.

Thank God he wants to restore the car, not part it out.

I am home again.

I am glad someone got the car to fix-up. I just wanted it as parts backup for mine. I would have kept it around it as a beater until the day I might need something major.

I wanted an engine that was clearly better than mine and I guess that is unreasonable because my engine is good. Any 20 year old engine is going to show some wear. I have driven my car over 8K miles in three months including AL -> OK and back, and AL -> WY and back.

I looked in the wheel wells and at the rocker panels and saw no signs of rust.

The interior has its good and bad points, it looked better in person than in the pictures.

I would have had about $850 in the car when I got it home and would have been happy with it. I guess I am looking for an engine like in 'Navy's 240D, looks like new, shiny. If I had taken the time to do a compression check I probably would have brought the car home with me.

To drive it home I think a basic safety check, oil change and some spare filters and fluids would suffice. The new battery, tires and alternator were confidence inspiring. The vacuum lines are patched but looked like they would hold.

I looked at a yellow 240D (77-78?) in someone's yard on the side of I-55 at about the 20 mile marker in MO. They want $800. Hasn't run for several years and cause is not known. Interior would clean nicely, firm driver seat, ~150K on odometer, several tight cracks in dash. Paint was oxidized unevenly, probably some old paint work. Would need paint to be really sharp, would probably buff to fair looking. This car is a little over an hour drive from 'Navy.

Why didn't you buy the car? You had the trailer with you. Never mind, you said it wasn't running. Have you thought about just buying a rebuilt engine for your car?

I don't really need an engine, mine runs great and gets good mileage, doesn't excessively burn oil. I just know it could be better. My thinking is that if I already have low compression on one cylinder, what is next?

I doubt I would buy a rebuilt engine, I could buy several cars for the price of a rebuilt engine.

When I can no longer trust it on long road trips, I will do something. I can buy a used engine for a reasonable price and may even go with a turbo when it comes down to it.
