kmaysob,
Not to be unhelpful if you are replacing ATE's, but in general I think it is a good practice to make sure the calipers are the same from side to side. As a result, calipers are usually replaced in pairs, and most often, unless there is a conscious intent to upgrade, the same brand of caliper is installed. If you are only replacing one, I think there is no choice but to install the same brand. Good luck, Jim

kmaysob,
You never said why you are replacing the existing caliper. Have you tried to rebuild it? The rebuild kits give you all the rubber parts to replace the existing rubber, for both sides for a couple of bucks. You need lots of brake fluid, I recommend Castrol GTX LMA DOT4 fluid and some time to clean the old ones off good. The rebuild is limited to the rubber parts because any other damage typically requires metal removal, and no metal removal operation on the piston or cylinder walls is within the scope of anyone but the factory. So, if the unit merely leaks, or sticks and can be repaired with new seals after cleaning it up, that would be your lowest cost, technically acceptable option. I would not even attempt to temporarily or otherwise use two different brands on either side of the same axle. Jim

replacement caliper
If you are looking for rebuilt calipers, and don't want to pay for a new one, you can check out these folks:
http://www.brakewarehouse.com/ I was considering them for a caliper on the SDL, but, I might just rebuild it myself. If you do use them, please post and let us know how you fared. |
