Disc brake help
84 300D This shield - I dont know what else to call it- the thin metal pan behind the front disc has rusted rotted and fell off. How necessary is it? Can I run without it? What are the likely results? Where can I get a new one? Thanks

wolfgang,
THe metal plate you are talking is an brake pad anti rattle device. The brakes will work fine without it. The part is available from fastlane. P E H |

Wolfgang,
OK now I know what you mean. I have some very rusted MB, but I never saw that shield rust away. I believe that shield is to prevent dirt/dust/snow /water ETC. from getting on the brake rotor. Running without the shield may cause increased wear on the pads and rotor and affect braking performance in wet weather. P E H |

Backing plate
Replace it or you could end up warping your rotors if they are hot and you go through a puddle.

Wolfgang,
I don't know the exact name but I would call it a brake rotor shield. I couldn't find it in Fastlane. It may be only a dealer part. Call Phil and ask him. Any MB like yours in junkyard near you? Maybe another member in the BB has one. Otherwise you are stuck with getting it from a stealer. Once in a while we have to pay full price for a part. P E H |

Those "shields" come in the caliper rebuild kits. Why not order up a pair of kits, pull the calipers,a nd replace the seals as well as the shields. I bet its cheaper to do that than to buy just the shields from your MB dealer, and you'd have replaced the rubber seals, too.

I have a pair of those pie plate disc things from one one my Carolina parts cars. -What's snow? Does salt make the road taste better?
Here is the deal. The parts car is a '79 built in '78. MB was spastic when it came to the attachment holes for these things, There are 3 different versions. The later models have about 7 screw holes in them because they made the newer versions backward compatiable. Since your car is an '84, and these are a '79 you may need to drill one or two holes for them to work on your spindles. The pair $30 delivered in the lower 48 states.....

Looks like I was not understanding what you need. I was referring to the metal inserts in the caliper pistons. I think you need the dust/water shields. I think they also direct cooling air to the rotors.
