85 300D Fuel Inj Pump..What are my options? Can I rebuild it myself or send it out?

On my 1985 Mercedes 300D Fuel Pump I was thinking of doing the rebuild myself, but the parts availability would be tough to overcome, plus special tools and documentation would be hard to surpass. Mr. Bible's experience has me nervous also.
Would it be better to send it out? In which case, how much would this cost?
Or is there a source that sells quality rebuilds?
Finally, I think the problem is in the ALDA, I need to double pump the gas pedal to get it to run like normal. Could I do this myself?

Get the make and model no. off the pump and start calling fuel injection pump service companies. Ask what they will charge to test the pump and what they want for a rebuilt pump. It is that easy.

You need a special bench to calibrate an IP such that the right amount of fuel flows to each cylinder based on the rack position. So you'd need a mini chem lab (tubes, graduated cylinders, timers, etc.) and the specs for the IP, not to mention replacement parts and seals. The shop that rebuilt my IP had a computerized Bosch bench that had a graphic display of IP output for each injector and calibration go/no go bands for the rpm, throttle position and ALDA pressure input. I don't remember if the control rod sensor and idle control device on the back of the IP were connected.

A rebuild is about $750. A little more to clean and balance injectors (might as well). Check with Phil for rebuilt IPs. www.adsitco.com offers used and rebuilt IPs.

Why do you think there's a relationship between double pumping and the ALDA?

Isn't the cheapest/ simplest fix for the problem to get one from a bone yard? Of course you want to test a couple things before plugging it in but....

There's a whole engine w/IP on ebay right now for $400. The seller says the engine was running when he pulled it. I think the listing said it had only around 120K miles on it.

Carra,

Impossible to do yourself unless you want to spend $50,000+ in training and test equipment.

Take you IP to Diesel injection shop and have it tested. Then if there something wrong with it, get a quote to have it fixed. Sometimes there is only some small part that needs to be replaced and the entire pump doesn't have to be rebuilt. This will cost much less than a rebuilt pump.

My local u-pull-it prices IPs at $18 ea. At that price ,assuming your installation time is free, why bother with a DIY or pro rebuild?

But not everyone is that lucky

I have been very lucky at the U PULL ITs, but not everyone is lucky everday...
