601 overheating and I'm confused
I have had my 84 190D for 4 months now. I have had no heat problems whatsoever then 2 weeks ago the car over heated and like an idiot I did not notice when the overheating started. It was early morning and when I turned the corner to where I worked is when I noticed the temp gage being buried. I parked the car turned the key off and left the key turned on so that the electric fan would continue running. Within 5 minutes the fan shut off. After work I added approximately 1 gallon of antifreeze (mixed) to the radiator and drove the car home (30 miles). The water temperature got slightly over 100C but never went into the danger zone.
I decided to park the car until I could get the thermostat changed hoping that that could be the problem. I changed the thermostat, and filled via the top radiator hose. I put in over 2 gallons of fluid before I was done and I made sure to top off the fill tank. I left the cap off to start the car and for some strange reason water came out the fill tank cap opening when I started the car. I refilled the tank and then let the car warm up to operating temperature. I squished the top radiator hose to make sure that all the air was out then I placed the fill cap back on. I then drove the car and the temperature started climbing. I then turned around and went back home and by time I got back home (less than half mile) the temperature gauge had pegged again. Again I shut off the engine, but left the key on so the fan would cool the engine. The fan shut off on its own in less than 2 minutes. I felt the upper radiator hose and it felt like it had a lot of pressure on it. After letting the car sit for 24 hours I checked the upper radiator hose and it still had pressure on it. I double checked to see if there was water in the oil and I found none. I had also checked the tail pipe and it showed no signs of water. I suspect that I have a bad head gasket, but I cannot find any evidence. I like this car, but it has me baffled right now. Help!!
