Computer & electronics in 87 300D?
Does a computer control significant engine functions in the engine of an 87 300D? How about the transmission? I'm comparing one to an 87 300SDL, which I've been told does not have a computer that controls the engine or an electronically controlled transmission. I hate computers/electronics.

The 1987 300D and 1987 300SDL have essentially identical engines and transmissions. Whatever is in one is in the other.
The person who is telling you the 300SDL does not have an engine computer does not know what they are talking about. Both cars have one. The computer does not control many functions of the engine, and none of the transmission. It is quite possible to start and drive the car without the computer operating, or even installed (I've done it.) The computer controls the pollution control functions of the engine, specifically the EGR and air recirculation valve on the turbocharger. It uses input from the airflow meter located in the air cleaner, along with throttle position and engine speed, to manage these two emissions control devices. In general, the car runs better with these disabled. It also controls the engine idle speed. Without the computer, the engine will barely idle without stalling. - JimY |

Thanks Jim. I was told the computer in the SDL controlled emmissions only--I should have been more specific.
