Not good

Finally got to work on the car I stopped trying to get the bolts loose to adjust it assuming it had to be adjusted and went ahead to testing it first I do things the hard way some times. Well I found what the problem is. I took apart the cylinder IP parts like the shop manual says and it is missing a copper washer, spring and an O ring. I took apart the other three and they were fine. Since I bought this car from the po who spent a lot on parts for It but did a poor job on workmanship. Well I think I just found another problem caused by his workmanship. I now need IP parts for what I think is a 1973 220d engine I hope I can buy just the parts from bosh I never see 220d at the wreckers and a rebuild is out of the question money constraints.
Thanks for your help so far. It will all be worth it when she fires on all cylinders because it is a beautiful original paint great shape no rust at all it will be worth all the trouble I hope soon.

Give Phil an e-mail or call. He'll find the parts. Buying parts from here keeps this web site going.

Looking back, I missed a key step in timing: the first spring and the next part (pressure valve) need to be removed prior to installing the drip tube. Any piece of tubing can be used for the drip tube once those are out (thanks psFred).

Someone got in a big hurry while checking the injection timing, I'll bet. Those are the parts that will get lost if you rush...

Copper seal is no problem, pressure valve insert and spring you should try an Bosch injection service, they will either have them or can get them, they are pretty standard.

trying to figure it out

Well I gave Phil the # off the crate engine plate he was able to figure out that it was a euro engine from the seventies but not exactly what car it is from. He referred me to a guy that might know I will try him tomorrow. Phil is trying to get the IP parts using the # off the IP. It sure would be helpful to know the year and model of the car the engine is out of it makes ordering parts a lot easier. Hopefully I will find this out tomorrow.

slowly

Well Phil could not help me bosh came up with a spring that matches one from another cylinder on the IP. The dealer came up with the O ring and a copper washer that is correct except the outside diameter is too big. Tomorrow I will try to turn it down to the right size. My son thinks he saw the copper washer under the pressure valve when we pulled it up further he thinks it slid down an opening into the bowels of the IP. My big fear is this car will need a new IP god the pressure valve is worn. This engine has great compression but it is hopeless to think I can come up with the correct IP to replace if it comes to that. Has any one put a w123 IP on an old w115? Just looking at the worst case since I have not had a cigarette in 25 hours and while I know I will never take any nicotine in my life again god I have smoked for over 25years and I think I am going to die but I just keep telling myself no one ever died from not smoking. I guess you have to be a smoker to understand well I ramble just want you all to know this project is not done but it is not dead either just going at a snails pace.

Matt Dave,

I have an IP from a 220D. The engine blew whan it ate a valve. Still ran on 3 cylinders.

Dave:

Hang in there -- I've been told the first week is the worst, gets a little better after that.

Fortunately, I has minor asthma, and cigarette smoke triggers it, or I would probably smoke three or four packs a day. I have enough bad habits (or addictions, for that matter!).

IP for a 220D isn't that hard to come by. The seal cannot fall into the guts, fortunately, and may in fact be under the pressure valve body, I don't remember (some are).

a long time

Well it has been almost a year since I bought this car. I have fixed all kinds of stuff replaced the radiator waiting to find a good IP I could afford. I also played with this IP enough to know the cylinder bore the delivery valve goes in was shot. I had 6 Mercedes diesels when I got this one now I just have this one.
I finally found the right IP at a time when I could afford it. I was all set to install it today and wouldn’t you know it the dealer gave me the wrong gasket rats. So to avoid doing any real work I decided to take apart the old IP.
Well some place in this thread we lost a copper washer my son thought he saw it slip down into the guts of the IP. Guess what I found in what is probably called the high pressure valve one copper washer while not the cause of the problem boy am I getting the I told you so from him.
The bottom rear where the oil is at its lowest point had a good quarter inch of fried baked on oil. I checked the new pump it is fine which brings me to my question.
How much oil do you put in this pump how do you check the oil level there is no dip stick on either pumps red oil caps? How often should you check it and do you change it with each oil change? I would hate to kill this IP the first month because I did not put the proper amount of oil in it.

Now is the hardest part resisting the urge to make a gasket instead of waiting for the correct one I know if I punch one I will end up with an oil leak and I have fixed all those over the last 8 months. This car will be my daily driver by next Sunday if I have to go pull the correct engine for it from the junkyard. Please gods let it be so?
