The engine block is cast iron as far as I know.

Wonder what I was thinking, must have had the notion you were discussing a V8, probably because I was reminded of one somebody brought in to Hans with a leaking heater hose. Overheating will ruin a cast iron engine, too, though, even with the oil cooler. Age is a wonderful thing -- you can forget all about how rotten you feel and what terrible shape you are in and remember all the good times! Peter

Problem finally solved!!
VICTORY! The problem was with the gauge. After buying two different used gauges, I eventually got one that was reading accurately and didn't display the erratic behavior of the old one. Now I know for sure that I am not overheating my engine!!
