Hey does anybody remember that Rudolf Diesel's original invention was actuallly developed as an improvement on gasoline internal combustion engines at that time?

Dunno why it didnt sell and stick among car manufacturers, although it's been said that Rudy had a negative personality and couldnt sell his own ideas..... finally committing suicide on account of his frustrations.

the e320 gas is a six cylinder, not a v-8, at least as of the last model.

Snibble I was going threw the same decision you are now when I was looking for a W126. Basicaly it came down to this:
You will pay more insurance on a 560SEL/SEC
Fuel costs will just about double
Operating costs should be slightly higher.
For me it came down to dollars and cents, the extra power was not that important to me and I like the way diesel's sound. But on the flip side you can find nice low mileage 560's without much of a problem, but you have to hunt for a sub 200k SDL.

BTW if your going for the 560SEL why not a 560SEC? They will cost about the same to maintain and insure?

The 350SDL's are nice to they also came with more features.

I am leaning towards the 560SEL. SEC is out of question because I need 4 doors.... I hate having to fold the chairs forward to have someone go back. Insurance is almost the same... I checked and its only a few dollars between the 560 and 300. Since I will be studying abroad... I will only be able to use the car during the summer. The rest of the time, the car will be used at most 3 a month. The biggest problem will be that finding the car that matches the color combination of black pear exterrior and grey or black interrior. Black/Grey is my favorite.. but black/black will also do. no rust... i don' care if its just "surface" rust... ABSOLUTELY no rust. I don't mind travelling to get it.. just as long as it meets the requirements. Price will be an issue... no outrageous $$$, mind you its a 14+ year old car thats not considered a collectible(excluding the SEC). I already said that the ONLY diesel considered is the 300SDL.... NO 350, 300SD. No 210 sedans... i am only looking at 126's. I am a 20 year old student starting dental school... I will not be able to afford something like that. just an FYI. If anyone knows of one that would be for sale in the future and is in EXCELLENT SHAPE.. please let me know. however, keep in mind that I won't be able to make the purchase untill the beginning of next summer when I come back. i fly out of the country next week. Thanks

I have a co-worker that used to put down diesel cars due to being too slow and smelly. Recently he inhereted a W116 300SD. We got to talking about MB's the other day, and now you'll pretty much have to kill him to get him to let the car go. I don't know what it is about an old MB diesel that does this to a person. All I know, is that I suffer from the same affliction. I seriously regretted letting go of that Euro 240D 5 speed that Palangi saved from the Toyota stealership. Now I'll be rectifying that mistake with the 300D that Old Navy found and rescued.

There is no way to "convince" someone to buy an old diesel Benz. There are numerous reasons to look at them. Fuel economy, insurance costs, longevity over a gasser, simplicity of the design, etc.

You will trade off a few things. The fuel pumps are typically a mess, they are slower off of the line, and not everyone wants to hear the engine.

All I can say is find one, test drive it, and decide from there if you want to go the diesel route.

If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.
Aaaugh, and I sold the Benz to you!!!

A friend of mine found and bought a bumper sticker with that very slogan on it. The REALLY scary part about it was, if you knew him, you would know just how accurate that statement was in his case. I still smile when I think of that little line.

Myself though, I don't like creating any more work than what I already have, so no, I don't "execute" that line.

Lightbulb Hmmm

If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

It takes as long as it takes to do the job right.
If it jams, massage it.
If it breaks, extract it, and rebuild it to look original, but with better materials.
If the owner wants to force it, send it to someone else.

The job is hard enough, without making it worse.

Snibble: Would you consider another 300SEL, that looks almost exactly like your old
one? Except for the euro lights ans bumpers our two cars are identical and I might consider selling at the end next month ( if your still around)
