1951 air cooled diesel VW beetle - link to article w/pic

Quote:
Volkswagen actually commissioned an air-cooled, flat-four, Beetle based diesel from its regular future projects supplier-Porsche-way back in 1951.
Just a curiosity.

Woah. 0-60 in 60 seconds! And a top speed of 68mph if you have a nice tail wind. And you guys and girls with auto 240Ds though YOU were slow! But, the 36-40 mpg sounded good. I don't think I'd drive it everyday, but, it would be nice to have an old beetle with a diesel engine in it.

Talking

I wonder what the heads were made of ….
They toyed with diesels very early in the development of the bug
And towards the end of WW2 some of the G@SSers were run off of carbon monoxide
According to a book of mine. I think it’s called the birth of the beetle
I’ll scan some pics when I get a chance

I heard about that. And so did a lot of people, an air cooled diesel made a lot of noise.

I also heard the prototype was stolen, and that the legal owners reflected what the thief thought about its unusual fuel requirments.

Who in their right mind would want to even steal a VW bug?

Porsche also did some air-cooled Diesel farm tractor motors

for a German company. The basic model was a three cylinder in-line, but I think that there was also a four cylinder (also in-line). I'm drawing a blank right now on the company name, but they were marketed in the USA during the '60s.

Addendum: Coldwar is right (see below) -- it was Deutz!
