Usually I end up waiting a little longer as I generally turn the key, then hook up seat belt, etc. and finally start it. This morning I was probably a little quicker than usual as I was anxious to see if/how it started after this whole ordeal.

What did they do about the injector lines?

I hope to get my car back with the new #22 head today.

The later inclined injection setups used shorter glow plugs, I believe for emissions reasons. There probably is no harm in using your old ones, but when it comes time to replace them, I'd get the 3.5L plugs. Details are in the OM603 engine manual, IIRC. I vaguely recall the old ones are 27mm and the new style are 23mm but I'm not sure.

Sarafin - if your car is that rough when the light goes out, test your glow plugs. Otherwise, yes, it is a good idea to let it glow 5-10 seconds after the light goes out when the car is cold. When it gets near, or below, freezing temps - then let it glow 15-30 seconds longer before starting! That makes HUGE difference. For even better cold starts you can modify the system to keep the plugs on for a bit *after* the engine starts, like the 1990-up models which had afterglow from the factory.

Chris - I was told the original injector lines will fit, with a little bending. The optimum solution would be new 3.5L injector lines but at ~$30 each, that's kind of a luxury...

My injector lines don't look to have been moved too much. I am sure I would see a difference if I looked at them side-by-side, but from what I remember of their previous position, they look to not have been moved much. Really the injector configuration does not seem to be that different from what it was before.

On a related note, is there much difference between the 14-style injectors and the 17-style ones? Since the 350 injectors were feeding a larger engine, I wondered if they were any different. I did notice when I merged onto the interstate last night, I laid down a god-awful cloud of smoke. I attributed it to a pretty hard acceleration and probably several minutes of idleing to burp the cooling system, but I also wondered if the new injectors were playing a role.

I think the injectors shouldn't matter - it's the injection pump that decides how much fuel to send, the injectors just 'pop' at the right pressure and let the fuel spray into the prechamber. Drive the car hard for a while, the smoke should gradually lessen. If I drive my car easy for several hundred miles, then floor it through a couple of gears, it will lay an impressive smokescreen. However if I repeat that redline run a second or third time, the smoke will be almost nonexistent. Idling, light loads, etc leave a lot of carbon to be burned off...

I expected that was the case, just wondering.
