It will cause alot of damage if it fails at speed. I inspect mine everytime I climb underneath the car. If there are cracks in it with threads hanging out REPLACE IT.

When the search gets back up you can see several posts and pictures of the damage which can happen when it gives way.... even possible to injure a person inside the car I believe....

Search has worked fine for me the last couple days...... although it did seem to have a lot of posts unrelated to what I was searching for.

eeek! what are the symptoms of this problem aside from the cracking? Are there any characteristics of the problem that show in the way the car drives?

Vibration that cannot be traced back to motor or tires. A pronounced clunk when shifting from reverse to drive. From what I understand the best defense is to check it ocassionally. When you get your tires rotated just get under it and check it out. Its fairly easy to see. If you have cracks.. replace them. There is one on each side of the driveshaft. Tranny and Diff. I also think others have said the front one is the one that fails the most often. Perhaps the stress is higher on that end.

Its possible that during inital acceleration (from a standstill) a discerning ear can detect some wobbly sound, I can't describe this well, but its something you can feel, partially in the vibration it makes and partially from the sound of the driveshaft bearings getting some side play from a failing flex disk. The front one usually goes out first.
At normal speed the torque loading on the driveline is much less than at take off, so any noise is unlikely to occur while driving at a steady speed. I had one start failing on a 300TD, it was real obvious but to the untrained it would probably just be dismissed as a normal sound for an "old diesel". As Ken Bergma (**************) says in the Ebay listing: You do not want to have this item fail!!!! I heard of a customer who had a car towed in with the floorboard torn open the size of a football, and the driveshaft bent and ruined. This can really mess up ones day! DDH

Im gonna dive under the car today and check!... my tranny clunks when going from reverse to drive, and there is substatial vibration only when heavily accelerating onto freeways and stuff.. My transmission doesnt slip, doesnt exhibit any age related wear issues. Shifts like it was brand new. But upon acceleration I can feel a pronounced vibration through the gas pedal and steering wheel. My engine mounts DO need to be replaced, but maybe the turbo flex disc is going as well.

Flex Disk Damage
Krawsczyn,
Yes, they DO fail unexpectedly, and suddenly. I just had my front flex disk fail last month on my 300SD, after only 35,000 miles. I had checked it, routinely, on a Saturday while it was on a lift, and it was fine. On Sunday I heard an off and on 'Thump, thump, thump' as I accelerated up an onramp. I only put 50 miles on it before I could get it up on a lift again, but that was enough to wear down 2 of the 6 bolts holding it together, and the two empty bolt holes were oval instead of round, necessitating the replacement of the parts attached to either side of the disk(the tranny yoke and the driveshaft). It cost me a new driveshaft and a new tranny yoke, in addition to the new flex disk. The reason they fail in front is because all the torque of the engine passes thru the flex disk via 3 bolts from the tranny yoke. The disk then turns (and flexes a little) and transfers all of that torque to the driveshaft thru 3 more bolts. So there is a lot of twisting going on when you accelerate or slow down the engine under load. The disks also absorb minor driveline vibrations. The disk itself looks like it is made of tire rubber with several plys of cord in it. Anyway, all is well now, but I'm thinking I got off lucky...
