tranny removal (drive shaft)
 
I decided to remove the tranny on my 84 300D w/ a turbo because i found another used tranny for sale for $400 w/ 85 k on it.

I removed the exhaust and drained out the tranny.
but I got stuck at the part where i remove the transmission output shaft from the drive shaft.

I am working at the location where there are 6 bolts.

To give an idea of where i am breaking the connection i will state what is towards the front and rear of the vehicle.

Towards the front of the vehicle there is a bracket below the tranny. Towards the back of the vehicle there is the universal yoke joint.

When i try to torque the bolts off (12 mm) I get no where cuz I just turn the drive shaft and end up turning the wheel. So I then wedged my tennis racket between the steering wheel and the brake to hold the wheels. Then when i torque the nuts feel like they are turning but the bolts dont feel like they are getting looser. I turned the bolts several revolutions and i was still putting the same amount of torque into them.

Is this where i am supposed to remove the out put shaft of the tranny from the drive line?

How can i loosen these bolts?

are you using two wrenches? you are loosening a bolt and a nut.
use the parking brake to prevent the driveshaft from turning.

Another method... jack up one rear wheel (just enought to allow it to turn), leave it in neutral. Use two wrenches on the bolts you can reach, rotate, do another, repeat. When all are removed, you will be delighted to learn about the slip fitting on the shaft that is secured by a 40 mm (42, 44?) nut. You need to loosen this to allow the shaft to shorten so that the front disc can be removed. This nut is best done with the previously raised wheel back on the ground :')
