Bought Timing Chain Crimper

Just bought a timing chain crimper. I would love to recover some of my cost while helping those that don't have one or access to one. Any interest in renting it? It is about 4 lbs and I was thinking anyone wanting to borrow it for a week plus shipping time pays the UPS shipping both ways plus $15. Sound reasonable?

Steve,
That's a good idea. But!! I've learned from experience that getting a deposit equal to the tool cost is necessary.

Too expensive for that type of deposit, though I appreciate the thought. I guess being a lifelong New Englander I still believe in trust. If someone takes me up on it, the good folks of this forum would see it. I don't think there are too many that would think of taking, what is intended as a mutually beneficial offer, and screw me in front of their forum pals.

Steve,

That's a great idea. When I do the chain on the 617 I will definitely contact you. May or may not be soon. We'll see.

Up until recently that was my thinking as well.
Recently a forum member got stiffed for the full price of an excellant used 240 engine...

Engine was sent by truck from NH to IL on trust. (yeah I know, that was the mistake)

No payment was made after engine was received, installed and delivered to customer..

We have spent a couple years in Maine out of the last several. We love Maine. I spent several years growing up in NE, it is in my blood. There is nothing on earth that compares to New England in the Fall.

I am thinking about making the trip to the Common Ground Fair (MOFGA) the last week in September. Maybe I can drive my veg-oil powered MB diesel up.

There are still roadside vegetable stands where the people leave a jar of money unattended so that you can take the veg you want and make change. The cafeteria in the hospital works the same during off hours. Wouldn't work in most places around the country.

At least confirm a Name, Address, and Phone. Even without malice things sometimes just go wrong, you may not get your crimper back.

I am curious, what did the crimper cost and who made it?

It handles both double and single row. If I do this correctly, you should be able to click below and see it along with where it came from . . .

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2486592082

I am fitting a case to accomodate secure storage and shipment of the tool set.

One of the best parts for me is after someone has used it, I may find I need to also. Then I can ask them how to use my own crimper . . .

When I saw it listed I thought it would possibly go for a reasonable price. As the time started clicking down and the bids started coming, I wasn't going to bid. I thought possibly someone needed it sooner than I did. Oh well. I had to try. That is what prompted me to make the borrow/rental offer. There are a number of specialty tools that I do not have and do not have access to. I tried to think of what a fair fee would be and based it on what I would have paid someone else making the offer. Still think it might be helpful.

I wonder if it would be possible to add a "Rental" section along with the Parts and Cars for sale sections? That would make this work a little easier...... people could list specialty tools they have and would be willing to rent or something they needed to rent.

A very noble offer, but if you like check with Larry Bible he loaned a Pre Camber tool out and I don't think he got it back. No deposit on security for you.
Good luck.
PS the person that borrowed Larry tool was from this board.

I think that this is an excellent idea. There are all kinds of tools such as spring compressors, axle wrenches, ball joint presses and such that no one person needs to own. These tools are necessary maybe once every 5-10 years. One tool could serve 20-30 of us.
