Is this shortblock worth getting?
And is there anyone in the Cleveland area who'd be willing/able to go take a look at it for me?

Looks decent.
Ask them what exactly was done during the rebuild and if there are receipts to accompany it. |

I was hoping someone here would be eagle-eyed enough to verify that it is indeed an OM616 block and not something else. |

It looks like a 616 block, and it appears that the oil filter would be in the right spot for a 123. It is too bad they didnt share the casting numbers.

Well I dropped the seller a line and here's what he had to say:
Dear Don: Purchased from my machinist. Have requested exactly what was done. From what they can remember was cleaned, new timing chain, crank shaft, rods, bearings rebuilt, and pistons sized and marked on piston SPO.03 90.87. Hope this helps. Wanted to give you a reply asap. I do have the reciept from my machine shop. If you have more questions pls ask. Thank you for your interest. |

I would want to see a copy of the receipt. The seller does not appear to know the correct terminology for the necessary work on a mb diesel so I would be wary of counting on an engine that is done correctly. the only way to be sure the pistons were fitted to the sleeves with the correct clearance, I believe, would be to measure it.
To do it correctly, you are looking at about 2500 to 3500 in parts and labor to get to the point that block appears to be at. If it is too tight or too loose on the cylinders the only solution is to disassemble it and do it over with new pistons or sleeves if it happens to be too loose. Pig in a poke, unless you can verify exactly what was done and the reputation of the machine shop. My guess is that they did the job for someone and the person lost interest in the project for his own reasons or because the machine shop bill was a lot more than he expected. Tom W

Sent the seller another message and this was his response:
"The casting numbers on the block are: 20H-76 ME 6160111601 Will scan the reciept later today. Also, Machine shop is forwarding the detail of exact work preformed on this block. Thank you" |

"The following work was preform on this 1977 240D Mercedes shortblock by - Gellner Engineering, Inc.
We thought to use this but have since changed our minds. Remove 1 Hex plug, Degrease Block, Sleeve 4 cylinders back to standard bore, Hone cylinders, Install Freeze plugs, Press apart pistons and rods, Clean rods, Install bushings in pin end of rod, Remove and replace sleeve on crank before grinding, Grind main journals on crank (Rods-Standard Mains - .010) and Hand wash block before assembly" What do you guys think? |

It sounds like they did all the right things, except that usually the bottom end does not need turning, so it makes me wonder if they knew what they were doing. I would try to contact the machine shop and ask what clearance they put on the piston/ cylinder.
If that could not be found out I probably would take a chance on it if it weren't too much money. OK, I just checked....685 seems like not too much money. I would look at the cam chain and guides closely, the guides almost always need changing but the chain often is fine. If the chain is very worn, the sprockets may also be worn. I would also take the oil pump out and check it for clearance and renew or rebuild as necessary. Tom W
