W124
As my 2001 TDI is deceving me more and more I'm thinking that a MB W124 diesel is the right answer (in the past few moths i had to changed the mass air flow sensor N75 and my wipers died on me in the midle of the traffic on a rainy day.. so i had it ..)
My wife has a W126 and i love it (a bit slow but it handles nice for a big car) But i have a few question before making my "final answer" As i live in quebec and winter is with us for 5 long months.... how does it handle in the snow and ice and cold weather ? Every model came with heating seats or is it an option ? Does anyone has any experience of bringing a car from the USA to canada ? My model of choice is 1987... so is a 15 year old car so i should pay no tax..(do i have to pass an inspection pay something special at the border..? ) I searched localy for W124 but the only only that i founs is a 1987 and the guy is asking 10k..... (167k miles) way 2 much... I remember a member of this board selling his on e-bay and looked very good for 3k-4k.. |
What's wrong with the TDI? Are you a member of the TDI Club? We have GTG's and do everything from timing belt changes to injector swaps, VAG-COM electronic code reading and repairs to cook out and general BSing. I have one every 6 months and the next one is Oct 16th here at my house in Poplar Bluff MO. My TDI GTG Page We have at least one TB change and possiable injector swap this time. Of course everyone will be getting their cars twicked with the VAG-COM. Nothing like having the IQ, Timing, and few other things twicked for free. Several of us have the software on our laptops, including myself.
Trying to find out about a local MB 300SD (turbo W126) for sale, has about 160,000 miles and I believe it's a an '83 and I was told by another party that the asking price was $3000. I plan on driving over to get a close look at the car today sometime. |

FYI we have a guy who just installed PD150 turbo (plus custom chip, intercooler) he's kicking ass...:) i love they way the TDI handles/drives, but the small "defects" are pissing me off.. MAF, N75, then my windows falling in the doors.. now the wipers..great engines ****ty electronics/assembly .. i figured that for less i can have leather style and something that is well engineered :) I mean for the price that the jetta are selling they should be more robust I bought my wife's 300sd for 1200$ with the repairs/parts i think it was a 2500$ investement :) if it wasn't slow i would buy one too |
I would definitely go for the BENZ. I also have a VW (2001 GTI VR6) and I have an 1983 240D. Guess which is more reliable ? GTI only has 30k and 240D has 185k and there is no slowing down on the benz. I definitely think it is a great move for you. Try to buy the best one possible for your money. AS a matter of fact, my father just bought a 124 diesel. He loves it; his brand new maxima hasn't been used in weeks. Great fuel economy, rear wheel drive, comfort and reliability. Not to mention the resale value if you ever decide to sell it. Try that with a VW.
Seriously think it over; you are on the right track. |
