Pre-Chambers

On my 603.971 engine in the '95 S-350, I have one pre-chamber leaking noticeably. It is leaking right where the notch is on the head. I sprayed soapy water on the others while I was checking it and they just bubbled a little. But the #6 is blowing pretty bad. My question is, is there any sealing ring on the chambers? Best I could find out is they just seal to the metal below without any seal. The book calls for resurfacing with a special tool if leakage occurs. Anybody have any experience with this on a Mercedes diesel??

Another question - Does it hurt anything for the pre-chambers to leak? Would the escaping gases eventually wash out whatever to cause a bigger leak?

I think that is how a cracked pre-chamber will act.

There is no seal on an OM603 engine. The PC body seals against the cylinder head. The PC does not crack or leak, however the splined lock rings ARE known to crack and leak! I'm guessing you may have a cracked lock ring. Remove injector, remove damaged lock ring with the special tool, install a new one - that should do it.

A leak between the PC and cylinder head would be unusual unless you were doing major cylinder head work and a piece of dirt got on the sealing surface, or you're using old vertical PC's on a new style head, etc...

Let me go over this again. Need opinions. I ordered a pre-chamber and lock ring in case of the worst case. I know a local mechanic that thought he had the right puller to do the job for me but did not. I called the local Mercedes dealer and they have the tool for the lock ring and the puller but not the cutting tool. They called another dealer to maybe borrow the cutting tool if it should be needed but they did not have it either. The dealer will not order the tool just for my job. I am going to let them remove the pre-chamber and install the one I bought to see if it will seal. But it seems like a dealer should be required to have the proper tools (specialized or not) to do any repair in the Mercedes service book. Am I off here or not? Hopefully it will seal. The dealer mechanic told me maybe we could put in one of the spacers the manual calls for after cutting (the thinnest one) and that would help. It is leaking right where the notch is on the head.
I guess I could buy the tool but I would still need the puller and tool for the lock ring. That would probably be a good size chunk. The cutter is over $500.
I hope gsxr is right and just the ring needs replacing!

I will be very surprised if it actually needs the PC seat cut with the $500 tool. A cracked lock ring is quite common, and that's what I'm guessing is the problem, but I guess you'll fnd out shortly!

Would you have anything done with the others that are bubbling a little when sprayed with soapy water or is that normal? They all bubble a little but #6 is much worse.

nah, a faint bubble isn't going to hurt anything, IMO... a steady bubble (decent leak) should probably be look at though. I wonder if my car does that.

Got the pre-chamber fixed today. The lock ring was not tight. The mechanic went ahead and pulled the pre-chamber and installed the new one along with the .3mm washer. No leak whatsoever. Now I am wondering about the others. Does anyone know of a good source for the tool that fits the lock ring. Better to make sure they are tight instead of waiting for them to leak and carbon build up under them. They probably would not seal off by just tighten them then.

Buy the tool for the splined lock rings from your favorite MB dealer. Don't mess with the aftermarket tool - it's not worth it.
