300sd wont start.

Ok, let me explain to you the situation,

Im 15, this is my first real car project. I just bought a 1985 300sd knowing it would need a new engine. I did absolutely all the work myself. I have completely swapped the engine. Stupid me didnt label everything, and some things i cant even seem to remember removing. (connectors, not major parts) I topped off all the fluids today, and tryed starting it. No go, it seems the IP is not getting fuel?? any suggestions?? The starter is turning the engine over. but even if i take off the #1 fuel line and turn it over by hand no fuel comes out, or even if i crank it over with the starter, i would expect a stream of fuel flying through the air. ?? Everything is connected, and the IP is timed. i tryed to use the hand pump to supply fuel to the whole thing, and that seemed to work ok. but i think it might be broken because the hand pump leaks when you pump it. Anything at all would be much appreciated.

My hand pump leaked terribly, after I rebuilt the motor on my 82 SD. The replacement pump is smaller and nicer because you dont have to lock/unlock it and it doesn't leak. Also, if the car has been sitting awhile it's quite possible you have algae/fungus growing in the fuel tank. Try getting a gallon of known good diesel and put in on the ground. Run a hose with a new filter. Disconnect return hose and run it to another container. You should be able to pump and get the fuel to flow through the system

Sady,

First replace the primer pump. If if leaks fuel out, just think how much air it can leak in. I think you have air in the system.

Don't expect a big squirt of fuel from the IP. If you figure how many squirts the IP makes from a gallon of fuel, you will see each squirt is very small. Also, at cranking speed with the fuel lines removed there is no resistance to develope pressure and the fuel will just ooze out of the IP.

Sady,

Scroll to the top of this page and you will see "Fastlane".

Click on Fastlane,

Click on online catalog.

Click on Make, Model and Year.

Click on Diesel injection.

Click on Primer pump ($20.25)

Click on buy.

Fill out order page and your part will be on its way tomorrow.

If you order $100, shipping is free. So look for some other parts you might need.

Don't buy more than you need!!!

If you don't need the entire pump assembly, you can buy just the pump for around $20. Part #D2010-50237. The newer design does not leak, and does not need to be unscrewed before use. An easy fix, compared to an engine change.

Do you think that a leaky primer pump is the reason for no starting at all???

If the original pump is still on the car; you must buy the entire updated pump assembly.
The new pump will not fit the old assembly, call FastLane and ask Phil.

whunter,

I put a new style primer pump only on my '80 300SD, 617950 engine. It fit and works fine. The rest of the pump assembly is the actual fuel pump. I don't know why that would have to be replaced.

Sady,

Yes a leaky primer pump can stop the engine from starting because it lets air in the filter and IP.

That's why we told you to replace the primer pump when you said it leaks..

new primer pump

Roy,

I replaced the old style primer pump on the SD with the new style pump. The only issue is how to get a wrench on the flats of the new pump without the benefit of crow's feet. I solved this by removing the nipple to the immediate right of the pump.

One additional bit of information that I have not seen in the replies to your problem is that it takes a long time for the fuel to make its way to the injectors after the lines are emptied. It is not uncommon to have to charge the battery once or twice before you can get one fired up after an overhaul. When I removed my 240D engine a few years ago, I cranked on the engine for a total of 4 to 5 minutes (not continously) and had to recharge the battery one time before it finally fired off. Since that time I have heard that some folks disconnect all of the injector lines and crank until they see fuel coming out....then connect and start the engine.

'Hope this helps. Good luck.
