Delivered the car today. Started/ran out great. I suspect the kickdown solenoid is inoperative on the car. She is going to drive it for a couple/few weeks then stop back by the house for me to take a look at. Total cost for the job came in at around $1800. The engine I got off of ebay was as good as advertised.

Jim:

I always like a job that turns out like that!

My eBay engine wasn't quite so good. I suspect it will run if I put new cam towers on it and a chain, but the cylinder walls are worn beyond the limit -- no hone marks visible for at least an inch and a half, and a distinct ridge, plus lots of oily soot in the exhaust.

I suspect the PO got ripped on the rebuild (actually, I know he did since they rebuilt a prefectly good engine -- busted vacuum pump diaphram was causing severe oil consumption, nothing wrong with the rest of it). Probably excessive piston clearance resulting in nearly instant cylinder wear.

I had rod come thru block on my 1980 300D. Cause was valve being sucked into cylinder. That happen because the Mercedes Tech didn't secure the adjustment nut after valve adjustment. Warranty replacement engine, thank you very much!

i didnt see it mentioned.. but since you are this deep into the project.. change BOTH of the oil cooler hoses!!!!!!!!!!! they are a high failure item.. and being full flow.. you will loose all your oil in a matter of seconds.

Worst failure I ever had was in my TD that i rescued from the junk yard. Someone put regular gas in it.. Have you ever seen a connecting rod bend and twist at the same time?? hahaha

That one brings back some memories.
An update on the car. Last time I talked with the lady the car was still running great and the a/c still works using r12 (I charged it up for her prior to delivering the car after swapping the engine). I think she is up on around 350k miles or so too. Don't ever doubt the durability of the W116 diesel.

I don't know what happened to the pictures from the first pic.

RIGHT!No EGR crap to to coat the intake with carbon and if you remove the oil breather so the turbo wont have to inhale oily vapors, perhaps many more miles to come

Were there supposed to be some pictures with this post? 'Cause I can't see any...
