Gunky tube under the dash, what is it?

In doing my best to understand my car I recently pulled the glove box out when looking for the ECU. I came across the remnants of some gunky tube. At first I thought is was insulation, because it was sticky black and kind of fuzzy, like the stuff I removed around the speakers in the back of my wagon. It’s nasty stuff, leaves a sticky oily residue that sticks to the carpet and is impossible to clean up. Then I realized it was some kind of tube that connected to rubber tubes together above the glove box.

Does anybody know what the purpose of this tube is, and what would be a good replacement?

Thanks Jason

It would help if you told us what car you're talking about.

Then it sounds like the foam tube for the climate control temperature sensor in the dash. Replace it with pipe insulation from the home improvement store.

Rick should be correct . . . however let me add just a little between the lines. I believe what he is telling you is the hose should be okay but replace the old insulation around it with some from your local home/plumbing supply store. Do a search on climate control sensor tube if you want some additional understanding of what it is and how it works.

I don't think it's insulation...

From what I can see there are two tubes that a made of black rubber between the 2 center vents and the left passenger vent. They are monted directly under the dash and are currently disconnect by about 10inchs or so but were connected by this gunky tube. I think that the tubes either vented or pulling area through the gunky tube, but I have no idea. This afternoon I will follow the black tubes to see where they go....

That tube connects to that little square grill on
top of the dash.

It is a sensor for the ACC.

As said, go to home depot and buy some pipe
insulation foam.
Use the foam to bridge the gap.

Louis.
