Bowden Cable Behavior

84 300DT auto tranny

The junk yard tranny that i got is working all right until I realized that they forgot to connect the bowden cable to the throttle linkage.

I connected it and first shouldered the nylon all the way to the throttle linkage. Here the tranny would not shift gears until I got to 5000-6000 rpms. So I backed it off some until it would shift to second gear at around 3000-3500 rpms but it would not shift to third. The only way to get it to go to third was to step down on the accelerator and take the rpms to above 4000 and then release the gas pedal. So I said to hell with it and disconnected the bowden cable and the car shifts smoothly into each gear between 2000-3000 rpms.

Any thoughts on where to set the nylon threaded adapter, cuz I tried many different settings but w/out any luck?

Do I run a risk of damaging the tranny if I don't use the bowden cable?

thanks

This dosen't sound right, even with the bowden cable disconnected!

Shouldn't it shift from first to second at or before 1500, and second to third at or before 2000, same for fouth?

With my bowden cable slacked off (clockwise rotation) gears shift at lower rpm's and sooner than should be. If I thighten or draw up on the bowden (counterclockwise) it shifts gears at higher rpm's with fourth shifting way up to 50 something mph.

That is the arrangement on my 87 300D, and I don't think there is much differents in the way my tranny operates from any other MB tranny?

that is correct

When i turn the nylon part in a clockwise direction the tranny shifts but it shifts at really high rpms (around 5000 rpm).

As I turn it in the counterclockwise direction, the car will shift at lower rpms but the only way to get it to shift is to press the accelerator down and take the rpms to 4000-4500 and then release my foot from the gas pedal and then it will shift.

When i disconnect it completely the car shifts without me having to lay off the accelerator, and the shifts occur at around 3000 rpm

Are you sure about rotation direction? The threads of the nylon cable adjuster are pointed forward in my car, if backwards, it would be opposite turn direction, but I cant see how that would be!

Is your throttle cable adjusted properly? If not, it will effect the bowden cable's ability to shift at proper rpm.

cable

I beleive that it is connected properly because I connected the same way i disconnected it off of the old tranny.

when nylon adjuster is shouldered that is when the cable is loosest (turned all the way in the clockwise direction) the tranny shifts at higher rpms.
