I have the service history for the 240D - it seemed to be well maintained, but the last sheet in it describes knocking noises. As far as I can tell, the mechanic bought ifrom the last owner for parts and instead resold it. I bought it from a guy that had bought the car for parts, and didn't ever get the engine. I suspect it spun a rod bearing.

Just a couple of simple questions, if I could:
Are the 240D engines reliable (compared to other diesel MB engines)? Are the older (1975-1990 range) MB automatic transmissions reliable? I see lots of guys posting about problems around the 200,000 mile mark. Hope to get a deisel MB some day, and it'll have to be an auto for the wife. Thanks.

Well my only 240D engine experience says they perhaps are not as long lasting as a 300D engine as my 240D lost it's engine at 242k miles, before I got it. From what I hear, if properly maintained, they will give a long service. It sounds like most will last longer than 250k miles.
