I was just reading the manufacturer's suggested maintenance schedule and tasks for my '84 300SD and there is no mention of any maintenance to be done on the turbocharger. Additionally, I've never come across anyone on this board who mentioned anything about turbo-related maintenance. So is this turbo maintenance free? If so, is it because it simply draws oil from the engine? Any explanations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's maintenance free in that there is no scheduled maintenance. Once in a while you hear of a seal or bearing failing, but 99 percent of them last the full life of the car. I am speaking of the 617 engines of course. On the 6 cyl engines I have heard of some seal failures where the oil goes out the tailpipe, but I have no idea what the percentage is.
In terms of day to day operation, the only recommendation is to allow a minute or so of cooldown time before shutdown after a long highway run, especially if not using synthetic oil.
