Nice 85 300D on Ebay!
This car is in the neighborhood of a friend in OKC. What do you think it is REALLY worth?
This friend of mine is on his way to see it and plans to get back with me. |
worth?
a difficult question when there are precious few of these in this condtion.
But, take a look at this one, recently purchased by a forum member, and compare: |

kbb
blue book is less than 2 grand in excellent condition. i know that is unreasonably low for this car... but why doesn't kbb take some of that into account. if i didn't know anything about these cars i might offer 3000 based on blue book. (not that i would pay 6k for it anyway)

wow... I have major car envy...

worth?
While I make no opinion as to what the 300 SD might be worth, I'll take a stab and suggest that it will sell for $9,840.
I stated the same amount for the 300D, previously indicated above, and was off by $40.00. There are precious few vehicles in this condition and the sales price is correspondingly inflated because of it. |
This car ('85 300D) has started a second 10 day posting and it had no bidders on the first 10 day period. This is for more then what the car is worth IMHO. Stop and think, this is not a real collectors car... too many made, too many left, too many miles.
It's a real sharp car and looks to be almost showroom shape, I emailed him about a/c, dash cracking. I included a picture of my '83 240D that I bought for $2600, but got no reply. My top bid would be about $3,500 for this garage queen. Remember this car could easily require $2000 to $3000 dollars in repairs in just a few short weeks or months of ownership. |
Thanks for the heads-up
Old Navy, thanks for the info about the second listing. The friend who went to see the car said it is showroom but obviously it's still there. Owner is out of town so no deal talk went down today. We'll see. ;)

Your welcome shipemate.
Remember if you are buying a car for day to day driving, there is one thing to always remember when buying a 20 year old car. It's 20 years old and things can just go bad from age not driving. Also did the car just get short stop and go trips at low speeds and short time periods of engine running for the 5, 10 or 15 years. If so remember that is real hard on engines. I would rather have a well maintained 300D with 200,000 highway miles on the odo then a garage queen only driven for 15 minutes at 30 mph on Sunday while going to church. My 240D was close to condition of this car with 143,000 and I also got all service documents, manuals, unused first aid kit, all glass is original with no chips or cracks and original window sticker. I have spent almost a $1000 on the car, but I was ready to put a $1000 into a $2600 car. ;) |
The highest bid of US$5,999 x 1.30 = C$7,800 approx. If all representations are true, IMO is a steal! If this car was nearby, I will buy it right now!
In my neck of the woods, you can buy one for as low as C$800.00 but will require C$10,000 to bring it to the example that is featured. These cars are not cheap to repair for things like transmission (C$2,000); air conditioning (C$2,000) and body work ($$$???) unless you can DIY -- not all of us can. SMOKELESS I, my daily driver, is of a very similar example and has cost me to-date about C$15,000. It's highly unlikely that I will recover close to it should I decide to sell it today. OTOH, what else can you buy for C$15,000? A KIA? |

Everything else is you say is very true. It's all about what the market or someone is willing to pay for a car. |
If you're willing to put in some effort, you can find a very nice 300D in the $2000-$3500 range.

$2k beauty in my garage!
That is MY price range. The 300D I'm going to be driving daily is exactly like the 85 in OK. When I finish the floorboard rust repair, do a complete detailing (replacing windshield/rear window gaskets tomorrow) and adjust the vacuum on the tranny, I will post pictures that you won't be able to tell from this Ebay car.
I'm with you O.N. about 200k on a well maintained machine at a reasonable price. It is, however, fun to "test the waters" from time-to-time. :D |
