Fuel Warmer Connections

The fuel warmer (heat exchanger) in my '87 SDL was disconnected by the PO during investigation of a possible fuel or oil leak. Leak turned out to be from the Injection Pump, but the fuel warmer was never reconnected since car lived in Texas.

It now resides in Canada and with winter approaching I thought I'd better put it back to work. Does anybody know if it matters which way the fuel warmer is connected? It is not obvious and I'm not sure if it has a check-valve that might make a difference. The manual barely covers this item at all and the picture doesn't clearly show the connections.
