Yes they were sold here (for one year only I believe) in a turbo-manny tranny form.
They come up on EBAY once in a while

Anyway, I hope that you are correct because I want a manual 190D-2.5T!!! If you see one, let me know! Where did you find out that Mercedes sold a manual 190D-2.5T in the USA? Can you post a link? Don't worry - I'm not disagreeing with you or trying to start an argument! I'm just curious and I'd like to find more information... |

I had a 2.5 liter turbo-diesel 5 speed, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. You can't beat that engine-boost-trans setup. They are worth searching hi and lo for.

I guess I can join Kamil in this club, i've been wanting a 190D 2.5 manual (or a 2.2) for my commute, its not THAT long but 70 miles round trip isn't something i want my 300D to go through . How difficult will it be to convert a 190D 2.5 turbo to a manny tranny?
Maybe I'll just watch the pick -n- pull yards for another 190D of some sort (saw a 190D 2.2 manual once and didn't take advantage of it). Found this on autotrader, was wondering if someone in AZ can check it out and see if anything fishy comes up, $1900 for a 2.5 is my kind of car 190D 2.5 5-Speed in Arizona

damn, it's hard finding a 190D yet alone finding a nice one. This will take forever to find.

The one sixto linked to could be a steal. The ebay ad is terrible, so it probably won't get much attention. And the problems he listed with the car really aren't too bad with the exception of the A/C. If it's not too far away, you should go look at it.
Edit: mapquest says 1 hour 14 minutes from Kearny to Burlington. Sounds like a nice Saturday drive to me.

Hey...
I found a 1986 2.5 with only 170k miles. It is a 5 speed and the tranny was just changed since it went bad. The buyer is asking 1,900 for it since that is what Kelly Blue Book wants. He has no computer so he cannot be contacted through e-mails but we talked on the phone. I just saw one pic of the car and it looks amazing from the outside. He said there is no body damage what so ever. The A/C does NOT work nor does the SUNROOF. The front seats are a little worn but the rear ones are perfect. It is an ARIZONA car so no rust at all. What other questions should I ask him ? Worth the 1,900 dollars ? Offer him less ? He has papers that show the tranny changed... 900 dollars in repairs (2 years ago) Opinions please ?

I wish I had some input for you. I just don't know enough about these cars yet, (The jury is still out on both of mine) and there is no way to know all that this car needs. I certainly would spend the money for a pre-purchase inspection.
I would drive it, and make sure there are no thumps, bumps, or other signs of worn out suspension/axle bushings, etc. My 124 came with some serious reciepts showing that the P.O. had spent a lot of money on suspension bushings, etc. It has recently developed another thump, that at first seems to indicate transmission problems, but I am pretty sure it is the rear diff mount bushings. When you test drive it, I would try and rapidly load and unload the rear axle, if you gas it and let off rapidly you can usually hear if things are tight or not. The A/C is out on my 190D, and based on the feedback that I have gotten, it would seem it could very likely cost a small fortune to fix! I guess it comes down to trying to figure out just what a worst case scenerio could be, then deciding if your commited to the car for the long haul, and/or willing to take the risk. I was surprised when I did the math on the fuel savings, it was going to take lot more miles to save the kind of money in fuel that the cars will require in maintenance. (Even at only 21mpg my Toyota pickup was a much better bargain, but I just could not stand driving a "Japanese" appliance anymore, so I am still pretty happy.) The old saying buy the most expensive example you can afford, as it will be the cheapest one in the long range, seems pretty sensible to me, that is as long as it has reciepts/records for maintenance. Sorry I cannot help you on this one. But there must be some high mileage 190D owners around here somewhere. PS: I would worry less about miles, then condition and maintenace records, sometimes the higher mileage cars will actually have more items that have been addressed and are thus low time/mileage items. |

I've got a 201 2.2 5-Speed with about 395kmi (early 84 model, manufactured in November 1983). I have a BMW 530i on order (euro delivery, so I am going to Munich in early November to get it), so its days of heavy use are almost over.
I have driven this 190 since 1989 when I purchased it with 60 or so kmi. The rest has been all me. The jury is in with me; the 190 is a fantastic car, and I prefer it to the the 123 617.9's and the 126 617.9's (both of which I also have). I put about 80 to 100 miles on a day. I replaced the tranny (the input bearing was destroyed) at 340kmi about 18 months ago. Not a very common problem, but I have heard about it before (btw, the clutches last forever). That has been the most substantial repair. I just replaced the half shafts because I had one with a hole in the boot and on the other side, I had a rear bearing that was going out (prior to replacement, it had been going out for about 6 months). There are small issues here and there, but overall, it starts up every morning and gets me to and from without problems. I drive about 80 mph most of the time, so my mileage is in the mid 30's (36 or so). I go through about a qt of oil every 2700 to 3100 kmi, which is not bad. THe biggest problem is the rust issue, which in Chicago and Western Michigan is quite bad. I have had the car repainted twice, and the rust is slowly coming back now (last body work was three years ago). When my 530i comes stateside in December, the 190 will have right about 400kmi. I will place it in the 3rd garage and slowly make every repair to it (must move the 126 to a family member's garage to make room). You can pm if you have any particular questions. I have done most all of the maintenance work on the car for the last 15 or so years.
