why I luv my 85 300D W123 more than my 87 300D W124
 

:D Last spring i thought I destroyed my 85 300D engine when I plugged the breather hose and ran it down to 1 qt of oil. The engine wheezed, shook, was incredibly loud and lost oil. My Indy thought the only thing that was holding it together was the debris from the scarred connecting rods..After 320K, I figured I had gotten my money out of it....

I went out and bought an 87 300D and it is a stunner.(For only 2K!) It looks like it came from the showroom. I fixed everything on the car, from a ruptured ALDA Line, no AC, dead shocks and struts, worn bushings that caused front end shudder, the htr controller, new chain, new brake rebuilds, and I thought I found a true Batmobile for my 3.2 hour commute--it glides down the hiway at 90 mph...

Last month i got curious about the 85 300D. I replaced the fuel pump and the car came back from the Dead! It runs like a kitten. For some reason I luv the 85 300D more and I tend to drive it all the time now:

(1) I dont have to worry about where I park it.
(2) Fits like a pair of Old Jeans
(3) people dont give me C___p about owning a shiney Mercedes
(4) Dont have to wash and wax it every week
(5) Can fix it with bubblegum and duct tape
(6) Indestructible
(7) Can use it as a Truck --dont have to worry about messing up the seats
(8) A true "Retro-Car" or "Anti-Car" with antique styling that loos out of place, like me
(9) I dont have to wrry about letting my daughter drive it

Most of those are true about my SDL. (5) took a little more than bubblegum and duct tape when the head cracked, but that's about it. (7) just yesterday I brought home in the back seat a lawnmower I got at a garage sale. I laid a garbage bag on the back seat. The back seat still looks new. (9) doesn't apply since I don't have a daughter.

Dont get me wrong about the 87 165 Hp 300D
 

there is nothing like Gliding up and down the Turnpike like in an 87 165 Hp 300D. At 90 mph, which most of the high speed lane does at 4am when I go to work, the car feels so smooth and stable and quiet.
(Of course I never go over 55, in case any NJ officers are reading this)
But for general purpose herky jerky driving around town, I got to love my 85 300D...

My 83's like that. It came from South Jersey too and had a tough life!
