Hi there DJ,
park the diesel??? I would stop and breath so diesel fumes and have a cup of coffee. gas is waste full as gas, not sure of the spilts, but gas is like 35% usefull as a fuel, the rest is blown out ye tail pipe, diesel on the other hand is more like 65%-70% usefull. do you really want to go back to dealing with... sparkplugs, and etc... any way DJ, try the 76 station at 164th & 1st. the pumps in the back are diesel only, and have a 4-5 cent discount from the ones in front. there very well maintanded. I haven't payed over 2.00 bucks a gallon all summer. Its the cheapest place in town for diesel I've found. then I usuall fill the mb about every 3rd week, and my f-250 every other week. take care dj.

$2.19 for diesel.....I wish......try paying $6.79 per gallon (imperial)

I read one of the posts saying that our fuel is so much more expensive because we pay more tax that then goes to subsidising our public transport....that may happen in mainland Europe but is certainly not the case here in the UK, where public transport could be significantly better than it is......some of our trains are 50 years old and the average age of buses outside of London is in excess of 10 years old.

I drive a lot. Everything is at least twenty miles apart here, no busses, no rail transport, this country is just not laid out that way unless your an absolute urban dweller, I don't even know where the nearist subway is in NC. Some city's have busses, but there iffy and can't take me to work, to my girlfriends place, to see my friends, to the grocery store, etc, etc. Like it or not, this country is built to be driven around in, everything revolves around it and to let fuel prices be so high or tax it further is just dumb. Not that I would not like to tax SUV's or whatever, but it's dead simple to just tack it on at the initial purchase or yearly, they have a stated fuel mileage rateing from the EPA for a reason. To suggest an overall tax like that on fuel is another fine example of short sighted crap that is makeing daily life in this country a real pain in the ass for the regular blue collar working class.

If it keeps up I've either got to start using alternative fuels seriously or buy another old VW.

Chip,
I know that station and I've seen the pumps in the back near that shyster auto repair shop. I never knew that those pumps were less than the ones in front. I've always assumed the price was the same. That 76 station is a bit out of the way for me but on occasion I do pass by. I was driving my 300D so much that I was filling it as much as twice a week. I was getting my fuel at an Astro station on 4th Plain since they were the cheapest. For a while there was a small market in Hockinson that had diesel at $2.00 3 weeks ago but they're now at $2.29.
I wish Costco had diesel.

Diesel fuel is cheap. 1.91 per gallon but just imagine how far a gallon will take you. I think it's really really cheap.

Many studies have come to the conclusion that the "fully burdened" cost of fuel is at least $5 or $6 per gallon - or about what they pay in Europe.

Google "true cost of fuel" for any number of interesting reads.

Tried to ggogle and came up with nothing. If you could provide the link, I'd appreciate it. Looks interesting.

Sorry about that, "true cost of gas" was what I actually search on
A fairly reasoned report

Just wondering what Mercedes gasser made in the last forty years runs on regular. Maybe a 123 230CE does. Even my W111 requires premium. I'm sure technical types can change advance to deal with lower grade fuels, but I'm talking about stock settings.

That being said, I think diesel is artificially inflated relative the the other fuels. It always used to be cheaper, and I get angry when it is MORE than premium.

My 300E 5 speed does a little better on gas mileage than the 300D, and the fintail follows behind at a respectable 20mpg.
Don't even ask about the 4.5, it is mothballed.

Lietuviai, what mpg do you get with that little 4speed? Surely a rare car in the U.S.

You need to start a thread on this, bet it is a simple fix.

For the record--diesel $2.09 and up--regular gas $1.89-$1.81 here in Southeast pa. along the susquehanna river.

Same thing here wolf walker-long drive for anything. And i'm a small business owner [blue collar-no .com company! ] who depends on fuel. I am sick of hearing what they pay for fuel in timbucktoo somewhere overseas. We get the quanity discount.

And more taxes? I spend a lot of time doing paperwork, etc. FOR FREE collecting sales tax for the state. We pay property tax, sales tax for our own purchases, school tax and you all get the idea. So for you guys wanting more fuel tax, move somewhere that has high fuel tax and live happily everafter.

Alternative fuels-I found a guy that has a barn full of oil he didn't/couldn't sell when he sold his business and retired. This is new motor oil and I'm mixing it in 50/50 with my diesel fuel cutting my cost in half and making the motor sound a little quieter too. He's gladly giving it to me and I'm happy to get it.
And for the record, I did a search and do realize under 50F I can't use it.
Next I'll try making a little corn liquor and dumping it in my F150. You guys in N.C. know how to make shine don't ya?

Cheers,

Bill

I visited Bulgaria for vaction during the summer. I looked at the prices for fuel and it was about $1.80 . But the thing is, it is not selling by the gallon but by the liter. That means its about 5 bucks a Gallon!

And Bulgaria is not a rich country and they dont complain. All I see is nice cars. Thing is all the cars, about 90% are running on Diesel. Toyota, BMW, MB, Audi, VW, Opel, Skoda( <--which is with a VW engine). I wich the U.S. just stopped producing Unleaded or at least stop making unleaded cars.

My point is dont complain when we get the better prices. My father complains a lot, but hes a truck driver.

joshhol?

Hi joshhol,
most likely the easyest way to burn the cheaper gas fuels is to change to a
thicker head gasket. I'm used to going the other way. someone here may know what thickness you need to get to 8.5.1 from I'm guessing 10.1. at this point in time, I don't really know if they make different thickness of gaskets for benz's. but if I wanted to drop my compression, that is where i'd start. hope that helps.

Diesel is still cheap, even if it goes about another 10 cents a gallon it is only another $1.70 a week for me. Diesel would have to be over $3 a gallon for me to start driving less. But who knows at the current rate it is going up by December we might see $3 a gallon.
