Question Lugging a 616

Hello!

Still looking at swapping a 616 into a Toyota, and I finally got some gear ratios for the Toy (at least in theory; haven't checked the actual pickup yet, but this is what it should have).

The overdrive gear in the tranny is 0.85, and the rear end's a 3.54 ratio. With 215/75R14 tires, this means that the engine will be spinning at 2661 RPM in 5th and at 3130 RPM's in 4th gear.

I haven't seen a HP/torque curve for a 616, so I'm hoping that someone here can give an idea...for flat freeway cruising, is 2650 RPM too low for a 616 to be happy at? That's actually right about where my 617 would be happy, but putting a 5 cylinder in the Toyota doesn't look feasible unless I did some serious sheet-metal work. I think the Toyota's dry weight is about 3600 lbs (someone said that the GVWR's 4800 with a payload of 1200).

BTW, according to someone, it looks like our diesels have a flywheel cover that the bellhousing bolts to, that could be made into an adaptor plate...so this looks doable.

Thanks in advance!

I think the 2.4L 616 (240D) has about 67 horsepower..

I thought that the 616 was more in the 90 horsepower range...? Or maybe that was the nonturbo 617...

non-turbo 617 is around 85 I believe. Or very close to it.
Thanks

I think turbodiesel is right, 67hp...... don't know about the torque but it won't be much. How much too long is a 617? You might be able to do away with the fan and have it right up on the radiator and use an electric fan in front of the radiator for cooling.

Most 240's don't have a tach... but I will tell you that if I keep mine in the ' one dot, two dot, etc proper ranges then mine Sounds Really Wound UP.....
Better to be a little over rpm than any under....

I think that I'm going to have to do away with the engine-drive fan on a 616 and put an electric fan in front of the radiator; that's how tight it is. Best I can tell, to get a 617 to fit, I would need to re-locate the radiator and remove the grille, or do a fair amount of creative engineering on the firewall with a BFH and move the tranny back. The Toyota's engine compartment's prety short... I don't have the measurements onhand, but I measured a friend's nonturbo 617 compared to the 22R that's in there, and there was a significant difference...although I may have started the measurement on the 617 too far back by a bit; I'm not 100% sure...

Tim, I can help you with this.

The engine puts out about 70 hp at 4400 rpm (or thereabout).

Horsepower will fall in proportion to engine speed, however, since the torque curve is not flat at 4400 rpm, horsepower will fall slower than engine speed down to the torque peak at about 2400 rpm.

So, let's say the engine has about 45 hp at 2661 rpm.

This is more than sufficient to push the vehicle along at 60 mph on level ground with no headwinds. However, the slightest upgrade will have you with your foot on the floor and the vehicle beginning to slow down.

However, if you don't mind the downshift, you certainly can run the engine at a slower speed when you are on dead flat, or slightly downhill grades. You might even get better fuel economy doing it.

This approach will not work with an automatic transmission, however, because you cannot easily get the gear you want.

The gearing being described sounds very much like my 240D 5 Euro 5 speed. Unfortunately, with no tach, I'm really just guessing, but the RPMs sound about right by comparison with my 300D auto which does have a tach. The 5 speed 240D cruises along nicely in 5th at freeway speed, but it is necessary to drop to 4th when much of an uphill grade is encountered. Around town, it never gets to 5th gear, usually it's in 3rd or 4th. By comparison,my old 115 240D 4 speed was really wound up at freeway speed (felt like about 4000RPM at 75 MPH).

Hope this helps. I would say go for it and just drive it in a lower gear as needed.

Thumbs up

Actually, sounds like that'll work perfectly! I was figuring that I would need to downshift to 4th at the slightest incline, but at least I should be able to get good fuel mileage in 5th.

I think this'll be a fun lil' runabout once the work is done...

Thanks again!

I'll be real curious to know how it does on the highway in 5th. It will be very interesting to see how it fares with only about 45 hp on tap.

Let us know when you get it finished.
