Nay on a gasser, at least one with a catalytic converter.
Diesel, eh maybe. I heard ATF, not motor oil.

do a search- there was just a thread on this exact subject not a month old. I put motor oil in my fuel tank (up to 35%) (617-912) and it runs great and is very quiet. A bit of smoke and stinky compared to straight diesel, but runs fine. Veg oil into the fuel tank emit no smoke, smells great and runs fine. :p

is there any power increase or decrease with either the motor oil or veg oil in fuel tank?

Thumbs up Wvo

I run 1 gallon of WVO (waste vegetable oil) per tank full. I have not noticed a power increase. Yet it is a good way to lube the fuel system. And the exhaust smells like McDonalds!!! Prior to this, running WVO for about a month, I added 2 stroke motor oil, 1 quart, in a full tank. WVO smells better and I get it FREE!!!!

I've heard of folks using wvo, motor oil, and 2 stroke oil in a 50/50 mix with diesel. Won't work under air temp of 50f. I guess it gels or something.

I've been running both 2 stroke oil[left over from a long sold boat] and old motor oil [not used oil] in mine. Probably about a gallon of each.

Used motor oil I've heard ok if filtered to 5 microns or less. Never tried it myself...

Cheers,

Bill

Thumbs up Kerosene

I have not tried this, but I will unless some veteran advises against it. But, a few years ago a long haul trucker I know said in winter he adds kerosene to his fuel to keep it thin. I will start lean, maybe 1 gallon per tank full.

Motor oil contains zinc stearate, which will deposit zinc oxide powder in the cylinders. This will polish the honing marks out and cause excessive wear on the valve sealing faces, so I don't recommend using much motor oil in the diesel fuel.

ATF is probably worse. I used to be the only high detergent type oil/fuel available, I think, and so could do a pretty good job of de-gunking the IP and injectors, but I'd use injector cleaner (for diesels!) today, it works better and burns better.

So long as you don't get carried away, any liquid hydrocarbon thin enough to pump to the IP and thick enough to lubricate the sleeve and plunger sets will burn pretty well. Do not use more than 20% kerosine or 10% gasoline in the 61X engines, and DO NOT use either kerosine or gasoline in the 60x engines, it will toast the IP (very expensive).

WVO is fine so long as it is properly filtered to remove proteins and it's warm enough to keep it flowing -- most WVO will solidifiy around freezing. In a mixture with diesel fuel, don't go over 50% unless you can start and stop the engine on pure diesesl fuel (else you have serious starting problems).

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks for the kerosene info. So, it sounds like 1 gallon of kero per 16 gallons of diesel should be ok this winter. If it wasn't for this forum I could NEVER afford this car!!!

I assume that you are referring to conditions where the ambient is cloet to or below freezing. If not, then someone needs to tell my two OM617.952s that they aren't supposed to be starting and stopping so easlily on practically straight WVO.

Mine starts easily on nearly 100% WVO also. Filtering has been the only problem, filter anything experimental that goes in the fuel tank. Filter it well. As the temperatures cool I will thin the WVO with more regular unleaded and diesel and maybe add a fuel heater.

For the purpose of extra lubrication for the injection pump, diesel is all she needs.

2 cycle oil... added to fuel ???

Search people, search, search, search. Links to two recent threads posted above.

Psfred, have you seen anything that would make you believe that it would be dangerous to add more regular unleaded to WVO. I am thinking I can mix as much as 30% unleaded with WVO in the winter. I know this is experimental but if I don't get detonation is there any other danger that you know of ?

Small amount of 10W - approx. 100 ml per tankful- just enough to compensate for loss of lubrication in the new low sulfer fuels. Both safe and effective. Also, as covered many times, using good Diesel additives like "High Test" from Lubro-Molly (the maker of Diesel Purge), or Wynns Diesel Fuel Treatment is probably best way to go, albeit expensive. I was lucky to find a case of 24 of the Wynns at a yard sale for $10. Once I got a fix on my untreated fuel milage, I added 2 cans of Wynn's when tank was half full, and ran it to near empty. Milage increased from 29.5 to 34 MPG (Canadian Imperial gallons) in my '76 300D.

A dude is using used ATF to run in his SD, for 2 yrs no issues except not clean enuf to pass Smog test in BC.
He filters down to 25 or more micron, usinf filter paper so is not so fine.
I got some from him and going to try it out.

some of the MB mechanics i know are running alot of atf in their cars w/ no real problems, used dirty atf. the only problem seems to be filters need to be changed more often. i told them to filter it first, at least thru an old tshirt. i tried filtering it that way and it does get some of the dirt out. i wouldn't run it straight though.
