Straight Pipe - Cat Back?

I was thinking of removing my resonator(center muffler) from my 93 300D W124...I wanted to do staight pipe, 2.5"-3" from the Cat, back to the muffler...has anyone done anything like this? anyone against removing resonator? i already have an aftermarket muffler, i just wanted better piping to go to it...

on my 79 300sd the rear muffler rotted out. A crappy muffler shop replaced the section with a 1.75 inch pipe and the mileage dropped 2mpg. I had them cut their work back off and went to a chain muffler shop and got a 2.5 inch pipe from the middle muffler pretty straight back and not replacing the rear muffler.
I can tell you that with the rear muffler removed and striaght pipe through that section there is no apparant increase in the car's loudness. The engine is still much louder than the exhaust. There is no tangible increase in mileage or performance either though that I could measure or tell.

muffler

I had the rear muffler rot out and fall off last year. The local shop replaced it with a section of straight pipe, turned the end to point down so it looked like the original. No problems and no difference in the amount of exhaust noise. Go for it

Exhaust Noise

My exhaust broke at the manifold down pipe flex joint during the summer.
I did not know about it until the down pipe broke at the resonator, used a binder strap to hold the resonator up and drove that way until the new down pipe arrived = 2 days.
My coworker’s only comment was; did you boost the turbo pressure, we can hear it spool up? LOL

I need to put my '87 300D up on a lift to look for a noise (it sounds like metal clicking when I drive over small bumps) and I'll get a photo, if it applicable to the '93 or not I don't know.
BTW, I have planned that if my CAT ever gives out (as in rots out) I will replace it with a straight pipe.
The 124 exhaust seems much louder to me than any of the 123 or 126 chassis with OM617 diesels.
I also thought maybe wrapping the line with material made for that purpose would reduce noise. I know that is one remedy for an ailing CAT in gassers, that is to increase the temperature in the CAT by wrapping the line to it with an insulation tape but its not cheap stuff.
I just want to reduce the exhaust noise for long trips.

So there really is a catalytic converter on the diesel 124s??

I thought the sulfur in the fuel wrecked converters? What does the converter do, since there shouldn't be any CO or hydrocarbons in the exhaust...?

I run a straight 2-1/2" pipe on my W123, still have the resonator.

"Muffler"? You don't need no stinkn' muffler..

Go completely straight pipe!

I did it and I love the sound. I will admit that it's loud to some people.

The W124 and all later diesels have a trap catalyst under the front seat.

The car will be much louder on the highway with a straight pipe, and this causes driver fatigue (that's why MBs are so quiet).

Pulled over for too much smoke on a 2.5 Turbo? If you are smoking THAT much, your car may have other issues...

well, one main reason for being pulled over was cause the cop was being a total d*ck...i have my car lowered, tinted windows, no front plate...that and its pretty much been proven that this cop hates people of my ethnic background...Portuguese, even though he is Portuguese himself....

about the smoking...it is most noticible when i punch it...at idle and regular driving there is not much...

just to get things straight...i can go straight pipe from the engine compartment, meaning no more flex pipe, cat, mid muffler or muffler, without it being TOO loud at regular driving??? too loud meaning if i am driving up the street at regular acceleration, i dont want to be setting off car alarms...

thanks

Turbos make excellent "mufflers". You may find a straight pipe is a bit loud, but nothing like a straight pipe on a naturally aspirated engine.
