Where did I go wrong? Oh the pain...

While driving my seven year old daughter to school this morning we became engaged in a coversation about me possibly replacing the '81 VW Rabbit LS diesel with a MB diesel wagon. "The Rabbit is our Baby", she kept reminding me as we drove. So I simply asked her if she still wanted the Rabbit for her first car or would she like to have a MB like mommy and daddy? The words that came out of my own daughter's mouth cut me like a knife. I couldn't have been more shocked if she had used profanity. She said, "I'm gonna be a gas girl when I grow up". Oh the heartache! I have scheduled a paternity test for this afternoon. Her mommy and I will be headed to the lawyer's office depending on the results of that test.

I'm sorry for your pain.

We can only hope that when she has to pay her own way she will see the light of spark free combustion. :)

Cut her off now and buy diesel cars with that college fund. :D

leathermang 10-06-2004 10:39 AM

That is a smart girl to understand that conceptual difference at that age... You must simply keep setting as good an example as possible...and when she has gathered a few more facts she will see the light....it may take as long as letting her make the money for her own car insurance.....

Words from an experienced parent

I had a similar experience with my son. My wife and I are firm believers in standard transmissions, but my pre driving age at the time son disagreed with us in ways only a teenager could without being killed. That is, of course, until he saw the car of his dreams, and it had a standard transmission.

She's young yet, she's just getting started not realizing what life's about.

My 13 year old daughter honestly looks at me when I drive my Mercedes and asks me "if I am embarrased to drive these cars because I cannot actually think that they look good, can I"? I will admit that she has good taste in general, but this kind of stuff shocks me. She just wants plastic, new and expensive without regard to quality. Maybe she will learn.

BobK 10-06-2004 01:09 PM

Good heavens man, don't take too seriously anthing a teenager says along those lines. Ask her again when she is 16. Phrase it like this: I only buy MB. I only work on MB. And I do not pay to have non-MB cars repaired. Do you want to drive or walk? My 19 year old daughter got that message real quick.

Alan Hamm 10-06-2004 01:50 PM

Oh, that is the plan. Wanna drive something different? Talk to your mother or buy it yourself! ;)

oilslick 10-06-2004 02:13 PM

I was thinking

I might just let her walk to school in the morning. It's a 2 mile journey. She's only seven. Hopefully she will grow out of this nonsense. :D

I'm only 15 and love the diesels. I really don't understand the mentality behind the import tuner vehicles and such, never have never will. My sister on the other hand who is 9 just calls it the stinky diesel.

There is a simple solution to your daughter's problem. As she sleeps, sneek into her room, wave a Diesel soaked rag over her and make Diesel engine sounds. A week or so of this should cure her. Either that or she will start having the wierdest dreams imaginable.

My problem is that we have a diesel boat. Inside it has a somewhat diesel smell. It gets in clothes and she and my wife complain about it all the time. My son and I never even notice :D

Well...MB has been in my family's for generations. From the ponton to the 210. I grew up with my mother owning an '83 300TD turbodiesel wagon and my father an '84 300D turbodiesel sedan. Both were loud, the '83 300TD was slow(I remember my dad's was actually quite quick), both shook the cabin at idle, both smelled funny, both looked old. I vowed to never own a diesel that was as crude.

Flash forward to the present. I have a mix of gassers and diesels...Guess which group I drive most often? I also have an infinite respect for the OM617.

Time allows maturity and wisdom to build on the soul. Allow it passage, and do not try to influence your child's views. Although annoying, try not to participate. They are, at this point, too foolish to understand the more difficult concepts.

--of course I was always the class-hermit, so what do I know? :o

You guys are MISSING the whole problem entirely!

Kevin (in a fatherly tone), I'm sure it was just a small lapse of faith on your wifes part, just a moment of indiscretion. You two should seek counseling to see if you can make it work out. You should still TRY to be supportive of your family, even though your trust was violated like this. Remember it was a long time ago and time heals all wounds.
If you can't work it out, just make DAMN sure you get the Mercedes......

I love talking cars with my three year old daughter, it's funny how much they notice. Kids are great. This thread is great, you guys are funny.

Stinky?

The exhaust smell can be sweetened up with just a little wvo, and I hear biodiesel does it , too.

Vladamir 10-08-2004 04:51 AM

Our family has just purchased a 1988 W124 300D and my two girls have decided that the car's new name will be "Bernard"

No....I have idea why....but I have to laugh, as there is always a mad rush to be the first out the door in the morning to see who gets to sit in "Bernards" front seat.

The neighbours must think us mad, as all they can probably hear is two little girls arguing "Its my turn to sit in Bernards front seat"...."No its not, you sat in the front yesterday and Bernard wants me to sit in the front today"

Kids.........mad....the lot of them! :)

i'm 28 and i've driven mostly gassers all my driving life.. but as i've aged from my high school years.. and the way the gas prices are going up.. things changed in my perception... i'm now an owner of a diesel wagon, after selling my jap gasser.. and i'm happy with it.. :D

just dont get me into driving fast.. coz that's the only problem i have with this wagon.. hehe... it's a non-turbo...:P

Interesting thread...

My 13 yr. old daughter learned something about hydrogen and whenever I talk diesel to her she quickly changes the subject to she wants a hydrogen car. I have to tell her that hydrogen is probably at least 10 years away so something else will have to provide the transportation for now.

"Car of the Future" by Gilly

Oh hell, JD, you're driving the Car of the Future, TODAY! It's a Diesel, it'll run on most anything! Kerosene, gasoline, Listerine, parts cleaner, tomato soup, roadkill, coal dust, dust mites, bunker oil, or beer. Guaranteed never to rust, bust or Co-llect dust, paint it grey and it floats. Hydrogen? Thhhhppppppptttttttt, childs play!

Education needed.

Just need to show her your reasons and belief... :D
The gasser junk must have come from TV or school.
Time to home school... :D
