'77 240d charging problem

Th' alternator belt seems to fit th' other pulleys it travels on but it sits way low in th' alternator pulley. Th' charging system light on th' dash goes out at idle but comes back on(most times flickering) at higher rpm. Th '83 parts car that came with th' '77 is missing it's alternator & I'm wondering if PO swapped it out. Anyone know if th' '83 had a wider pulley than th' '77?
