Thumbs up Where to find 240D N/A motor?

I have a lead on a nice 1979 240D... problem is something is wrong with the motor. It won't start. So worse case scenario, I'll need a new long block. Car is only $300, 195K on the car. Good body (yellow ), interior is clean. Just needs some TLC it appears on the outside.

Anyone know where I could pick one up? Just a regular 2.4L nonturbo. As long as the donor motor is south of 200K I'll be happy. I'll prolly toss on a new timing chain and oil pump while the motor is out and perhaps new gaskets... then hello 35-40mpg.

I'm guessing about $500-700 to install that motor too.

Thanks for any help!

35-40 mpg is a tad optimistic for a 240D. The 123 body is a lot of car for the 616 motor. I have yet to get a real good test on my 79 240D but a 50/50 mix of city/hwy gave me 24mpg. Perhaps some of the other 240D owners could chime in on their miles per gallon.

I picked up a 240 donor car for $50. The car was rear ended and looked a mess. But the engine and tranny are fine. I now have less than $300 total invested and that includes registration. The deals are out there. Keep looking till the right one comes up. Check with your insurance carrier. They may have just bought one

The 616 is not really that costly to rebuild if you diy.

Thumbs up

I was thinking upper 30s for straight highway. Maybe I got caught up in sales promo and lines for the cars.

I'm thinking the motor is locked/seized... so I don't know if what's in there is repairable. And I certainly don't want a $300 pile of junk parked by my house so that's why I'm trying to see what all I'd be getting into. I'd like to be prepared to score a quality used longblock ready or near ready to drop in.

Ideally I'd drive a '83-85 300D TD, but until I can find a nice one... this 240D would work well.

Realistically, a 240D will give you about 29 to 33 mpg. It varies from tank to tank and from car to car.

Have you tried turning the motor by the crank bolt? If it's something as simple as a bad starter, bad ground, etc. then it may turn from being a good $300 deal into a really great deal.

As far as mileage goes, my 240D 4 spd. stick car gets 30 at the best with pure highway driving. This was, however achieved running at 70 mph most of the time, so I suppose you could do better if you don't mind never getting places.

That 123 body is known to have been equipped with a 300 motor also. Don't pass up the right deal on a donor car with the five cylinder motor. You could probably sell some parts here to help with your costs.

27mpg in mixed heavy foot driveing on my 5cyl TD. I tried to talk myself into a 240, but the MPG is just not there to justify as slow as everyone says they are. ~shrug~

phantoms... there were no batteries in the car, it was just sitting. The guy told me that it was running the just stopped and wouldn't crank. Said the motor made some noise then quit. I'd like to have seen it try to crank and see what noises it made for myself.

I doubt it's major due to milage being shy of 200K (a lot but should still run), but from his description sounds like the motor seized somehow.

Anyone hear of oil pumps taking a dump on these cars? Maybe the mech injection box locked up?

TwitchKitty... How difficult would it be to toss in a non turbo 300?

My 240D 4 spd has averaged 27mpg over the past 25k miles. High milage was a shade under 30mpg on pure highway driving.
