Differentiating 240bhp 560SE motors from 300bhp motors...

Hey all,
I'm in the market for a used 560 engine to install in my W107, and I've got some questions:

First and foremost, how does one distinguish a low-output 560 from a hi-output 560? Dropped by my friendly MB Tech today, and according to the Bosch directory, the 300bhp engine is RB # MB1128, whereas the 238bhp engines are either RB # MB1130 or 1172. The 1128 was made ONLY between 10/85 to 08/87. All the aforementioned engines are M117.968's... I checked out an engine he happened to have lying around, and I couldn't find any evidence of this RB code nonsense... Now my question is, how can I best distinguish a 240bhp engine from a 300bhp engine? Are there any external clues to guide me? Secondly, what exactly is the difference between the two? I'd really appreciate your help on this.

P.S. I am located in Lebanon, where the majority of used cars and parts come from Germany and Switzerland...

You learn something new everyday... But rest assured, they DO exist!

I should have added that I am aware of the existence of ECE, KAT, and RUF variants, its just that I haven't been able to locate anything of the sort on the block itself... Remember, I don't have access to complete cars and thus cannot check any plaques which may be on the car itself... Maybe the exhaust manifold might provide some clues?

They were probably offered in any color in Lebanon. Grey included.

I can't think of any way to tell from the motor but it seems the upgrade code was 822. It should be possible to get the chasis number that the questioned engine was in and from the data card decide whether it came with that option code.

It also could be presumed from the cams numbers installed. The cam number is punched into the back end of the cam. The right cam could be 117 051 17 01 or a replacement changed to 117 051 25 01. So the numbers one would see on the end would be 17 or 25 for the right and 16 or 24 for the left.

560 engines 300 vs 240 HP

cams and compression ratio were the difference If you can get the engine number off the block--it can be run down to see what is was born as.

560 engines 300 or 240?

Euro versions were the higher output ones--Germany, etc where high octane gasoline was available. Ones sent to middle east were lower compression

Interesting
Does anyone know where do you find the engine number?
What are the numbers on the black seal between valve cover & heads on pass side of block?

Mine reads Mercedes Benz then it has soem numbers

looks like

110 010 1421 650 more numbers but hard to read
could be 118 to

Maybr just a part number?

Still trying to get engine to run cooler but I would like to try to get all the numbers...

Last batch of ECE new long block 300 HP engines. They exist.

There is a guy who posted within the last year who had a friend who claimed to have bought the last batch of new, complete 300HP ECE 560 engines.

He is in Belgium, and I think there were about 30 of these engines.
Crate, long block engines, complete, and in the factory wrappings.

Probably a diligent search of the archives would turn up the post with that information. I think it was on Benzworld.org

But I cant be sure.

They would be the very last of the best ones.

I believe he wanted about $6,000 each for them.

That would be a STEAL. Though of course, shipping expenses would be painful from Europe.

Though it might work for HYDRA the OP from Lebanon, if he had it sent there from Belgium.

Hard to beat a new 300HP engine.
