I used Bosch glowplugs becuase I scored a great deal at Autozone for 6 of them! $7.99 each!
daverdla is your egr blocked yet? All 603 owners should do this as soon as they get their car. Mine had a nice layer of tar built up in the manifold. The first 3 runners in front get most of it with the 2nd one back getting the most. The valves also had a nice layer on them.

Don't know about the egr. The parts should be here friday but unfortunately, we'll be away for the weekend so I won't be able to get to it for another week or so. I anxious to see if the new glow plugs reduce the smoke.

I was amazed at how much less smoke I was seeing after I disconnected the EGR.

yo,
i had the SAME exact symptoms when i switched to Mobil1 from dino. less consumption, less noise, but blue puff when i started up (this was in the summer in houston, so its not the cold!). i was using 0w-40 though. switched to pennzoil synthetic 5w-40 and its all good, just as smooth, lower consumption, but theres no smoke when i start. no theories here, and definately dont want to start a debate over oil, but try that before anything else that is more expensive.

I tried M1 0W-40 once in my 82 300D and the car didn't like it at all after a cold start. Lots of blue smoke and rough idle. All was fine when I switched to 15W-50. I'm wondering if it's because 0W-40 is too liquid and as a result it easily gets past the oil rings into the combustion chamber when the engine is cold and has bigger tolerances. I'm cosidering to try 5W-40 for this winter but I'm a little worried.

0W oil is way to thin for old diesel engines! Only newer gas cars should use it, my friend's dad uses 0w-40 in his S600 and it works fine the oil pressure comes up real fast. Theirs nothing wrong with 0W-40 you just have to use it properly.
Grdenko try an experiment for your next change; switch to any other brands 5w oil. I bet your consumption will stay the same.

The mobil one I switched to is 5W40. I'll see how it goes once I put the new glow plugs in.

0w40 oil is very very tight tolerance engines only. Our diesels are not tight tolerance engines. Using that could alow metal to metal contact in an older loose tolerance engine.
