Thumbs up Paranoid... Oil Pump Chain

Am I paranoid, or should the oil pump chain be replaced at certain intervals?
I am planning a big day for the MB, new timing chain, adjust valves, replace aux cooling fan, new multi-function switch, power steering filter/fluid change, replace brake fluid, drain and fill differential, and check boost pressure. I know maybe a 2 day event. Any advice would be appreciated.

Now that is a tough question. I replaced the oil pump timing chain and the oil pump when I had the engine out of the car and apart.
It is entirey possible to do the job with it in place, and the oil tiiming chain is not expensive, but what a miserable job to do.
I spent some time asking whether this was critical. Was told not, but that with the engine out not a bad job to replace, just the cost of the oil pump set me back. .

I have only heard of them failing in the newer 5cy diesels. I don't know the engine number but they were used in the 1990-93 300D's.

You can't worry about everything. If it isn't the oil pump chain it is the vacum pump in my case. Their is always something that can go wrong.

There is really no need to worry about the oil pump chain. In almost all cases of timing chain failure, the chain does not break on its own. An associated component such as a guide rail breaks, or a tensioner becomes worn causing the timing chain to jam and break.

Since there are no such associated components for the oil pump chain, the odds of it breaking is just almost zero, if not zero.

Good luck,

No guide rail?

LB,
Doesn't the oil pump chain have a guide rail of some type?

Make sure you replace the oil pump chain tensioner guide too. On the last three 617 engines I have gone through this is the one that was showing the most wear.
