Angry My 300 SD Will Not Turn over

Well I put a thread in yesterday about my new new long block having a loud knock at the front of the engine, and this morning I went to test some procedures and started the motor to let it warm up.But the motor went into a shaking frenzy and died and now the motor will not turn over at all.My question is that there was the smell of unspent fuel from the exhaust and the motor had good oil pressure could this be a valve or timing issue. This motor before it started any of this, the motor had a great loss of power.I would appreciate any help that I can get.

If the motor is froze up .... (not cold, locked up) then...... hmmmm broken timing chain and it has things all jammed up? Maybe do a search in here on the subject. Not sure what to tell you to search with. "Locked engine" "Froze Engine", "broke chain"??

Timing chain malfunction?

Well it is a new motor,But I have recently laid off so I cannot afford the manual for this car but I did have the 6000$ to have this new motor installed when I was employed. But my question is if the timing was off or the valves were set to tight would this cause damage to the engine,or would a possible main or rod bearing do the same thing. The motor was at idle speed when this motor locked up.And with good oil pressure.

Thumbs up Locked up

When you hit the starter what happens? Sounds, noises, anything. Have you tried turning the crank pulley by hand. I mean the nut with a 27mm socket? It turns clockwise when facing the car from the front. Don't force it in case the timing chain came off or broke. It should turn fairly easily even with the injectors in. Good luck!!

Loud knock from the front of the engine was probably a bad chain tensioner allowing the chain to slap, and it has now either jumped or broken. If the engine cranks but won't fire, blowing copious smoke out the back, the chain jumped. Re time engine and fix the tensioner (also verify that the chain isn't stretched too much -- tensioner won't work then.

If the engine is now locked up, probably have a broken chain jammed on the crank, and likely a broken cam or (hopefully) cam towers. If this happened at idle, it's unlikely there was any other damage except possibly a bent valve.

Question James Dean

Well I have looked and felt inside the valve cover oil fill and the timing chain seems to be on the sprocket. Is there anything else that I might try to see if the motor is locked up because I cannot get a 1 1/8 socket between the radiator and the pulley. But if the chain has broken would I be able to feel it?There is other issues about working on this engine because it is still under warranty, what might that do?If any one out there has any more info Iwould be very thankful. prestonables@peoplepc.com Thanks James

Take the valve cover off -- should be four nuts or screws on the sides, plus some linkages and stuff on top. You will then be able to see the chain and check the tensioner.

Try putting the socket in and then putting the ratchet on the socket, clearance can be tight but it's not THAT tight. You might need to go to Sears and get a 27mm deep socked, too, instead of using an extension.

It's possible that the starter is seized, too -- in this case, the engine will rotate, but the starter won't turn it.

Not to pry but didn't you post originally that this motor had a warranty? Most rebuilds come with one, this should be covered under the warranty.

JD, call the shop which did the engine work, have them deal with it. If you take the valve cover off, it may void their warranty.
Don't take the chance. Call them, they will come with a trailer and take to their shop.
As you say "There is other issues about working on this engine because it is still under warranty, what might that do?"
VOID THE WARRANTY!
