I know. I have one too. I posted endless videos of it. Lietuviai, it's time to get more digital equipment. You need to show these fellas, and prove it to yourself, what your car can do.

Every 124 diesel sold in the US was faster (0-62 mph) than any 123 diesel. Some by more than a couple of seconds. A 124 that isn't, isn't running as it should run (there were some with little diesels sold in the rest of th world that weren't as fast as the turbocharged 123s)!

I no longer consider my 300D stock by any means. The W124 I came up against looked in nice shape on the outside and I would assume the car was totally stock. While I have no idea in what state of repair the car was in, I would think as nice as the car looked on the outside, I'm sure the car was well maintained, though only an assumption on my part.
I have a good digital watch with a chronometer that I'll try to time my 0to60's tomorrow. Hopefully I don't blow the engine in the process.

And I'm sure that's at sea level. In Denver, it's more like 35 seconds.

The times are in!

I used the chronometer on my watch yesterday and I did a few runs on one of the back roads in my area. I did 4 runs and I averaged 10.22 seconds and this was with a full tank of fuel on a fairly dry level road with the engine fully warmed up to 80C and all accessories turned off. Not bad for a car with the 617.952 turbo diesel engine with 233.5K miles!

Thumbs up

10.22 seconds! That is moving! I wonder what boost you are running in that thing? It's almost two seconds faster than just about every other 617 turbo.

How do you get it off the line and up to 2500 rpm in less than three seconds?

If one really wanted to have fun, w123 gas cars had steeper gears..

I wasn't paying attention to the tachometer, too many things going on.
I'm concerned about the boost myself. I'm trying not to make a habit of running it so hard too often. I had the engine screaming at 4K+ on the tach passing someone today. I'd hate to be a contributor to Engatworks thread, rod through the block. One thing is it's no longer hard to pass people on the two lane roads on my way home anymore. I'm wondering what the redline is on one of these engines.

Once i was driving my souped up Volvo 940 Turbo with 235 Hp...

and a middle aged guy pulled up in the nicest newest 85 300D I have ever seen..and i winked at him and we went at it..but with a TWIST...I let him win on purpose because I respect the guy for keeping his 300D that nice, I mean, i know my Volvo can do 8.4 sec to 60, but I wanted that guy to feel good...

You won't do any damage to the engine in terms of "rod through the block" if you keep the speed below 4400, that's for sure. I think that they could run all day long at this speed. However, I would be concerned about the boost. If you are running more than 12 and combining that with very high engine speed, the piston longevity could be of a concern. I'd put a boost gauge on it to check. A bit over 10 seconds is awful fast!

Here is one which "slightly" under 10 seconds and over 6000 rpm:

Yes, it is diesel.

Some pictures of the construction of W124 turbo diesel with intercooler, look pictures, ignore the lingo

http://mersuforum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9396

First trial dynochart in page 2 430hp@4800 rpm. RPMs are too low, mods to follow.

Contrary to popular belief, old MB diesels can be engineered to be sports cars. Even MB attempted to do so with the C111.

With that kind of horsepower, if one could gear it right, one might have a 60x engined W124 that can edge the 200 mph mark. Now I think that qualifies as insane.

Now, Markku. Kindly show us a "super turbo" car powered by the 617 engine.
